Kathleen MeConkie Collinwood has become the latest lat-est Democrat to try to unseat Rep. Jim Hansen. R-L'tah. who has served since 1VS1 and had only a handful of close races in the heavily Republican 1st District. The 50-year-old Bountiful community activist has the odds stacked against her. Yet MeConkie Collinwood also has some distinct advantages. "One of the reasons 1 think it's w innable is because I really think women haven't been represented, represent-ed, but there are more women who are voting than men in some of the counties." she said in an interview. James MeConkie. is a Sail Lake attor- ney running for the state Senate seat vacated by Minority Leader Scott Howell. He recently won a $9.7 million judgment against Intel mountain Health Care in what is the state's largest medical malpractice award, and formerly ran for state attorney general. MeConkie, a lawyer and the author of "Mormon Doctrine;" Joseph B. Wirthlin. a member of the church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Richard B. Wirthlin. a former political strategist for President Reagan and member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy; and Oscar MeConkie Jr.. a senior attorney for the church who once ran for the U.S. Senate. Her proponents see MeConkie Collinwood as having been cut from the same mold as prominent female Utah politicians such as Martha Hughes Cannon, the first woman state senator in the nation in 1897. and Reva Beck Bosone, a lawyer and Salt Lake City judge who became Utah's first woman in Congress in 1950. "She is the epitome of what a Democratic woman is moderate and LDS, homemakers. but. like a lot of Utah women, she woiks." said Meghan Holbrook. head of the Utah Democratic Party. But it may take more than a name to put MeConkie Collinwood in Congress. "The biggest challenge that she's going to have, as with any challenger, is getting name familiarity famil-iarity and getting some image out to the public," said Weber State University political scientist Marcy Everest. "How well she does that is largely dependent on her organization and her money." Hansen has said he takes nothing for granted and plans to run a tough race. He also has attracted four third-party candidates candi-dates in a district that includes voters from 12 counties, extending extend-ing from St. Georee to Bncham City. His Democratic challenger has no prior elected experience, but she was involved in the Concerned Citizens of Bountiful, which lobbied for more open space and worried about unrestrained unre-strained growth. In 19Vr. she was the sole Democrat seeking a four-year term on the Davis County Commission. MeConkie Collinwood campaigned cam-paigned on a pledge to revamp county government but lost to incumbent Gayle Stevenson. She also helped her husband. Dean, in his failed campaign for a state House seat in 1V92. He is an administrator at the University of Utah and former professor at Weber State University. MeConkie Collinwood taught public school after graduating from Brigham Young University, then received her law degree from Minnesota's Hamline University in 1983. She now handles han-dles general litigation work ?.s a senior partner in the law firm of Randle. Deamer. MeConkie & Lee. Her campaign will include town meetings in every county And as the matriarch of a large family, she naturally emphasizes children's issues. "We're no longer this little place that's set apart from the world. In today's world, you're a world citizen, not just a Utah citizen, cit-izen, and our children need to be educated well so they can compete com-pete nationally and internationally." internation-ally." she said.
