Local support helps cancer patient by DIANA HINGSTON Record staff writer To Peg Bodell and her daughter, Sundyn, the world is anything but a cold, heartless place. Since Sundyn was diagnosed Dec. 15 with aplastic anemia, a form of cancer that kills bone marrow, the pair have been overwhelmed by the kindness of the community. Well-wishers have flooded them with plants, flowers, books, videos, cards, uplifting letters and cheerful cartoon strips, to their surprise and joy. Following several weeks of chemotherapy which killed her own damaged bone marrow and immune system, Sundyn received transplanted bone marrow from her younger sister. Over the New Year she spent three weeks in an isolation bubble to avoid infection while the new bone marrow began the slow process of reproducing. Sundyn is a senior at Park City High School. She hopes to graduate this spring and doctors, amazed at how well she came through, have given her an 80-90 80-90 chance of recovery over the next six to nine months. Her mother credits her daughter's remarkable progress in large part to the tremendous support they have received from the community. "Recovery is still a roller! coaster," Peg said "Some days we'll see signs of slight rejection and then the next day she'll be a bit) better. It's the emotional healing that's the hardest." Sundyn is still very tired,' though she is gradually improving Her white blood cell count is! currently 2.8, while a healthy person's is around 500. Her platelet: count is 30, compared to 300. Peg: says she still has a fair way to go,' but the love and support they have received from friends and strangers has helped enormously. ; Counseling Institute director to offer advice by NAN CHALAT-NOAKER Record staff writer When one member of a family is having problems, everyone is affected, according to Counseling Institute Director Lynn Maynes. That is her approach to counseling and will also-be the focus of a free seminar and open discussion about relationships at A Woman's Place Bookstore in Park City on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. The seminar, she said, will also cover the various developmental stages of all relationships. "Everyone who is interested in relationships is invited to come." Dr. Maynes assumed directorship of the 12-year-old, private, nonprofit non-profit Counseling Institute in November. She took over for Joan Hatfield who held the post for six years and wanted to retire. The Institute, which is located at 1725 Bonanza Dr. off Munchkin Road, specializes in family counseling, domestic abuse services and perpetrator rehabilitation. According to Maynes, the agency, which is affiliated with the United Way, is particularly dedicated to serving low income clients in Summit and Wasatch counties. Maynes earned her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University. She has worked for the state Division of Tin A -. (If. h Dr. Lynn Mayne photo by Nan Chalat-Noaker Family Services and the Comprehensive Clinic at B.Y.U. Previously, Maynes offered counseling services through Gilroy County in California. She recently moved back to Utah and lives in Oakley. According to Maynes, along with the area's rapid growth comes a greater need for social services. "There is some notion that Park City doesn't always take its social problems seriously." The real challenge, she added, is in helping those who are facing income problems which leads to stress at home. Those are the people who need counseling but feel they can least afford it. The Counseling Institute, Maynes said, has a state licensed domestic abuse outpatient treatment program and also contracts with the state to child abuse and neglect cases. "Yes," Maynes says, "there are many cases of sexual abuse in' Summit County. When I moved' here from California I wasn't' expecting to see, that" ,J According to Maynes, no one is' turned away from the Institute' because of an inability to pay and there is currently no waiting list to see a counselor.
