Show s ts ttlm EEaflnttcDn0 The Park Record Section A Thursday, August 13, 1992 B LMn Dollars and sense Editor: Dr. Brian Schiller is suing us, the taxpayers and parents of school children in Park City for $500,000.00 He has already cost us $50,000.00, the equivalent of two teacher salaries, in order to hire lawyers to defend against his lawsuit. If Schiller had not protested his probation, his probation period would have been over as of June 24. Does a now former public school employee who is attempting to take $500,000.00 of our money away from the schools and the children of Park City to put in his own pocket deserve our support or our sympathy? Sincerely, Kathy Dopp Promoting domestic peace Editor: On August 4, at the grand opening of WalMart, the Domestic Peace Task Force received $3,772 from fund-raising fund-raising efforts by WalMart employees. The task force was formed after a public forum and panel discussion on domestic violence was held in Park City in January. The task force is made up of concerned citizens of Summit and Wasatch Counties, committed to education and service. The goal of the group is to raise enough money to establish a safe house or shelter in the area. Volunteers are still needed. For information or questions, call 649-4629 or 645-9306 in Park City or 654-4383 in Heber. Jean Paulson Local heroes Editor: We are taking this opportunity to publicly thank the Park City Fire Service District for the excellent job they did containing the fire at Dolly's Bookstore. Even though our building adjoined Dolly's, the damage to our facilities was minimal. The results of their efforts are remarkable when the conditions they faced are considered. We sincerely appreciate their preparedness and professionalism. Cliff Blonquist, District Manager Utah Power- Park City District A successful transplant Editor: The kidney transplant worked! Thank you, thank you to our friends, families and colleagues for your cards, phone calls, prayers and words of encouragement. My daughter Holly is doing great with her new (my old) kidney and she's feeling wonderful and is home again with her three beautiful children and her husband Chris. And thanks to Peter and the staff at Park City Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation for preparing my body for such an ordeal. With Love, Renee Daines Sold out Editor: Last Sunday was another glorious day in Park City. I stood on my balcony and admired our beautiful old town and the surrounding mountains. To enjoy the day to its utmost, I jumped on my road bike (as I have many Sundays in the past seven years) and headed for Old Ranch Road. Okay, I'm not going to complain about the construction I rode through on the way because we hashed that one out until we were blue in the face and we all know why it has to be done right? Old Ranch Road was as gorgeous as ever despite the new development and the many speeding cars. On to Jeremy Ranch where I crossed over and rode back on the nice newly paved road past McDonald's and WalMart where I stopped, not to catch my breath, but for fear of my life! My God, did the arts festival crowd come back a week later to terrorize the junction? In a span of ten minutes, there were two near accidents and more horns honking than I've heard since I was in Chicago. How many tax dollars will it take to put up an unsightly stoplight to control traffic and enhance the looks of K-mart, WalMart, and whoever else we've sold out to? I hope all involved, from the county commissioner, to the big landowners and the developers are proud of themselves for selling out. I hope you're also proud that those beautiful mountains I look at from the junction on my bike are now just a backdrop and no longer a reality. Let's cherish our open space and continue to work hard to preserve it with viable solutions, i.e., the sensitive lands ordinance and the Summit Land Trust. Let's protect and treasure what we have left. Sad in Park City, Dena Fleming First Nighters Editor: The setting was perfect a beautiful deck, pots of flowers, music and with mountains as a backdrcp what a night First Nighters had Friday at the Grubsteak Restaurant! Hans and Sally Fuegi, the owners of the Grubsteak, offered an incredible buffet. The delicious food, wonderful service and the festive crowd combined to make this evening a huge success. Even an unexpected downpour did not dampen the spirits of the group who went on to attend the opening of "Blame It on the Movies", a wonderful entertaining musical that young and old love. This play will be presented every Thursday, Friday and Saturday through August 29. Don't miss it! Park City Performances invites everyone to become involved in community theater. We are also grateful to the Deer Valley International Chamber Musicians and to all those who attended the tour. Thanks to everyone. Kay Kunkle, President Womens Council of Realtors Utah politics Editor: Cannon is so ridiculous. I read the letter by V.G. McNey, and I cannot believe it. Cannon is such a snotty little man. What was he thinking? By not letting the other candidates use his spotlights, it made it painfully apparent that he is nothing but a spoiled little man who doesn't let anyone else play with his toys. But the refusal isn't the biggest problem. Cannon's surrounded himself with other little people who act the same way. When Jim Young, Cannon campaign manager, threw a foot-stomping fit, with plenty of onlookers, it was also obvious that not only is he a spoiled brat, but he's daring people to do something about it. How unprofessional. Cannon hoards the spotlights, Bennett offers his to the other candidates. I guess I know what this means. You're only as good as the people you have around you. And Bennett is a much bigger man that whiny little Joe Cannon. Bennett went out of his way to help others; Cannon tried to use the situation. The only thing he didn't do was run around saying, "I got something you don't got." What a greedy little man. Sincerely, Holly Shafer Alpine, Utah Portable health care Editor: I am very impressed with Bob Bennett's proposals on health care. He wants to make health care travel with the employee. To do this, he said that the company should be able to take the money that it would be spending on health care, and pay it directly to the employee so they can set up their own health care and buy their own policies. The reason for this is that people are staying in unproductive jobs because there i is supplied health care. With this plan, the health care would travel with the person after job changes thus, portable health care, putting the responsibility back in our hands. Like it should be. Sincerely, Scott Jacobs Bountiful, Utah Cutting inflation Editor: I am one who questioned the use of a balloon in Joe Cannon's campaign. I couldn't see what it had to do with issues. Now we've got the incident where he almost ran into a church steeple. My church steeple. First of all, with Cannon carting that thing everywhere from the Manti Miracle Pageant to the Days of '47 Parade, there are bound to be accidents. People running the thing become lax in their vigilance, etc. simply because there is so much being done all the time. Salt Lake is a very tight terminal control area (TCA). This means that the control tower tells you exactly where you can be. You never see aircraft loitering around just to do it. In other words, nobody joy rides in the TCA. I think that the balloon should be disallowed. If not, there should be some requirements for minimum numbers of pilots to hopefully avoid irresponsible incidents like hitting my church. It's the only sould solution. If Cannon wants to have the balloon, he should take greater care to make sure that it's safe. Alisha Burt Salt Lake City Political hype Editor: I am disappointed. I can't believe Utah Republicans gave Joe Cannon 46 percent of the vote at the convention. What does he stand for. ..besides unconscionable success? Having seen him on "Take Two," KUED and especially the August 1 debate on KTVX I was left with the unmistakable conclusion that there is little more to Joe Cannon than hype. Of all the candidates, he was the least "senatorial." Bob Bennett creamed him on all three occasions. On the first two, Ted Stewart ate him for lunch. Yet, these were the no. 2 and 3 vote getters at the convention. I was relieved to see Bob Bennett emerge at the convention. I'm just as happy to see so many of my associates turning toward his optimistic visions of the future and solid ideas on Congressional reform. I even like Bennett's commercials. In other words, I know what Bob Bennett stands for. In the case of Joe Cannon, I know what he stands behind. Sincerely, Joseph Fetters Provo, Utah Loose Cannon Editor: I watched the President while he was in Utah, and found it interesting to observe the Z Republican candidates for various offices while they sat on the dais with him. The hot topic in Bush's speech, it seemed, was the line-item veto. Everyone in the Marriott Center seemed to be for it. When Bush said that he was, also, the applause was substantial. Except for Joe Cannon. Of all the people in the auditorium, there was one person who was quite visible with his lack of support for President Bush and the line-item veto. Why was he so visible? Because he was up on the platform. Of all the people up there, only Joe Cannon had the nerve to not be supportive the veritable leader of the Republican Party. It's already public knowledge that Cannon does not support the line-item veto. Now it's public knowledge that he thinks he's a pretty neat person and doesn't have to support the President of the United States when he visits Utah. What a petty little man.
