I Ik by ALEX WELLS Record staff writer After a long absence, river slalom racing returned to Northern Utah when twenty-three kayakers and four canoeists took part in the first annual REI River Slalom Race Aug: HontheProvoRiver. At least five years had passed since the last local race, and enthusiastic en-thusiastic river runners were eager to have a go at the 14-gate, 200-yard-long course a course designed to make competitors use the skills needed for technical river running. Competitors paddled downstream through 10 of the gates, and upstream (making use of eddies) through five (three for canoeists). Two of the gates were side by side in in the river, forcing racers to "ferry" across the current. When a competitor touched a gate, five seconds were added to his time. A missed gate resulted in a 30-second penalty. Mark White of Salt Lake City had the day's fastest time, completing the course two minutes, 16.1 seconds. The fastest woman was Ellen Tolstad, whose time (2:38.6) was more than one minute faster than her nearest competitor. Park City's Todd Johnson blew away his competition in the solo canoe race when he executed a clean (no gates touched) second run. A former competitive flatwater canoeist, Johnson was nonetheless surprised when he sucessfully negotiated all the turns. "Because the gates were so much lower (to the water) the kayaks could slip through them, but the canoes were so much higher... in that sense I was surprised," surpris-ed," he said. Steve and Jerry Erickson of Hoytsville finished..Jirst . in the tandem canoe class. Deanne Tetzel, the first-place finisher in the women's beginner kayak class, said that running the course "helps you improve your skills on a technical river... being able to catch eddies quickly and ferry across the river." Richard Eyre of Salt Lake City agreed that the course was good practice. "It's real good for your paddling 'cause you have to stop and make moves rather than just going straight through the rapids." Eyre loved the race. "It's totally fun; two thumbs up." 4 American Heart Association WERE FIGHTING FOR VOUR LIFE Aug. 1 3 time trials draw over 30 riders Park City True Value Hardware 1685 Bonanza Drive 645-9800 Open 7 days a week Mon.-Sat. 8-6 Sun. 10-5 SPECIAL mmmm Rainbow 12" Patio Thermometer A149S66 $799 Tote 6 f Coo,ers gV 511.59 PiN GO18110426 Brilliant Blue I - Vj GOisi 10442 Classic Red - J G0181 10472 Aqua " Th coolen thai taffy ice in ih lid Tale 6 cooler holds si-12 o: ctns cut ice in (he hd Interior is nam end odor resistant e Extra-thick insulaiion keeps drinks cold e Handle locks lid in puce 16' Aluminum Extension Ladder IAW07162 557.95 14' Aluminum Extension Ladder IAWD7U2 $49.89 a Brass Locksets jjjp?a Interior Door - Privacy Door 1 1 1 1 EntrV Door KW300TCP3 Bath KW400TCP3 Entry KW2O0TCP3 Passage $7.59 $10.29 '6.89 Cordless Screwdriver rout nigh torque, csrdktii nn 9orlaMH. 14 ' lui court Auto-lock feature lor um M manual Krrwdnvef Drives and removes a wid. range ol screw CMrging stand stoei U hi, hat (.charging LEO e Bit storage m handke ol tool $16.69 BO90IS UNION. 21" Bow Saw UN629707 GOTT vA GAL GAS CAN ' i C3 "001216 3.29 5 GAL. "For me it's the perfect course," Walkingshaw said. "It (involves) (in-volves) sprinting; I don't have to worry about the downhills. " Salt Lake City's Becky Magrath led the women's single-lap competitors, com-petitors, finishing in 27:48. Like Walkingshaw, Magrath enjoyed racing rac-ing on the White Pine course. "I like it; it's got a nice steep hill at the beginning and the end is slow, gradual downhill." The fastest racer of the day was Dave Wood of Salt Lake City, who completed two laps in 42:34, 31 seconds faster than Park City's Kendall Ken-dall Butts.
