M'lW'l nimWiW r Nadalee Noble journals Park Record Thursday, July 26, 1990 Page A3 Continued from A1 road to Mirror Lake you might, from the outside, be charmed by the quaintness of it all. But inside, the house that had no running water and was heated by woodstoves was her prison. For more than 15 years of the 23- year marriage to Donald, Nadalee wrote in Journals of a life of extreme hardship and physical and mental abuse. But her writing is not bitter. She searched to find the good in her life and to make that the focus of her writings. She took oral histories of the old timers in the area, she taught sewing sew-ing and ceramics, she tended her animals and garden and her five children with pride. Her husband who had a college degree in geology, did odd jobs of stonework and handyman functions and sold firewood. He disapproved of her working and for most of their married mar-ried life he forbade it. She wrote a book for the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers about her area. And in her sunny downstairs room, where her fig tree is still growing and her geraniums are flowering, although no one has lived in the house since February, sits her rolltop desk where she escaped. Often. In its drawers are dozens of letters from around the world from penpals in Burma and New Zealand and Kenya and England. At her desk, too, are envelopes filled with newspaper clippings about the trials and tribulations of her good friends, John and Vicki Singer. The fundamentalist Mormon Mor-mon family made the headlines often for their beliefs, for the murder of John Singer and the eventual bombing by Singer's son-in-laws of the Marion LDS Church. Inside the house, too, are still dry hanging flower arrangements in the entry way. Wild garlic and yarrow yar-row flowers are carefully braided. The blue enameled woodstove set in the rockwork corner has a flower arrangement on top of it. The hardwood hard-wood floors creak in a eerie fashion when you walk through the multilevel multi-level house. And a wind makes a door gently knock against the wall. Like someone trying to get out.
