According to Al Bronston, coach of the team, David Van Luven, 16, and Tony Chambers, 15, qualified for the Junior Olympics by ranking among the top ten male JI (16- and 17-year-old) and JII (14- and 15-year-old) racers in the Intermountain Division. Bronston said that the level of competition in the Intermountain In-termountain Division, which includes Park City, Jackson Hole, Sun Valley and Pinedale, Wyoming, should prepare Chambers and Van Luven for the nationals. "The kids who are winning these (Intermountain) races are just about the best overall, nationally," he said. This is Van Luven's second trip to the Junior Olympics. Olym-pics. But it's a new experience for Chambers. "Tony has really just come through this year," Bronston said. "He started way down but has improved im-proved consistently all year. I'm hoping to see him in the top 10 in the JIIs (nationally)." The competition will include three relay races and two individual cross-country events. N ordic competition heats tip Last weekend was busy for cross-country racing enthusiasts. enthus-iasts. There were track races at Wasatch Mountain State Park on Saturday and relay races at White Pine Touring Center on Monday. According to White Pine's Jim Miller, the seven-and-a-half kilometer loop on the golf course in Midway is "the best race course in Utah. It has more hills than the track at White Pine and yet is not as steep as Brighton s." In addition to a strong field of local contenders, last Saturday's race drew several seve-ral members of both the men's and women's nordic racing teams from the University Uni-versity of Utah. Most of the U. of U. racers are Norwegians Norwe-gians and, according to one observer, "They creamed the Americans." Among the Americans, Rob Landis of Alta secured his lead in the Wasatch Citizens series. Bettye Wise- Stephans leads the women's division. Jim Miller also noted that Park City Junior Nordic team member Dave Van Luven beat his coach, Al Bronston. Miller added that at the March 5 race in Snow Basin there will be a heated competition for second, third and fourth places in the Wasatch Citizen's Series.
