Prairie League opened a six-night stand in Park City. Initially it appeared as if the ol' jitters were about to overcome the featured performers, per-formers, who were late getting on stage, and the assembled patrons, who were cultivating inebriated mass impatience. In the end, however, rock n' roll was the victor as the League blew away the doubters with a tightly-arranged 25-song set. "This group is more ready to work and tour than any of the others we've had," offer: ed Mike Riley after the show. The bassist, vocalist and band ringleader seemed genuinely enthused about the band's new additions: Mike Hamilton, former guitarist with Kenny Loggins; Al Garth ex fiddle-horn man with Loggins and Messina; and Tim Goshorn who returned re-turned his fine guitar and vocals to the band. Original drummer Billy Hinds and keyboardist Michael Conner fill out PPL's current edition. Instrumentally, the music certainly hasn't lost anything any-thing by the changes, although al-though the group has lost an on-stage cheerleader with Vince Gill deciding to quit the road to enjoy hs new parenthood. Gill, according to Riley, is pickin' some with jazz mandolinist David Gris-man Gris-man and looking for a record deal. This current edition, however, how-ever, seems to have all the right chemistry to continue the success story Pure Prairie League has enjoyed from the beginning. The great twin guitar sound, the tight yet relaxed vocal harmonies, and the general "we're having as good a time as you" ethic still pervades their show. The set included many of their bigger hits and quite a few new tunes, ones that will be appearing on their next L.P. "Kansas City Special," "Something In the Night", "I'll Change Your Flat Tire, Merle", "Love You Tonight", To-night", "I'll be Damned", "Aimee", "Pickin to Beat the Devil", Johnny Otis' timeless "Hand Jive", "I've Been Abused", "Two-Lane Highway", "Night Time's the Right Time", and "I'm Almost Ready" were just a few samples from their more than two-hour set. Near the end of the evening they got into some great blues, which served to showcase both their highly-polished highly-polished individual picking talent and their eclectic taste. Pure Prairie League will be performing one (long) show nightly through Thursday Thurs-day with two shows Friday and Saturday. Opening the show will be Salt Lake's fine traditional bluegrass group, the "Oquirrh Ridge Drifters". Drift-ers". Monday evening's opening act, however, was the guitar-fiddle-vocal duo of Jack Quist and Cliff Tipton, a couple of highly-talented ex-Cow Jazzers who have been pickin together recently re-cently in Salt Lake. Following Follow-ing their set it was announced announc-ed that Tipton will be joining the "Sawmill Creek" band in about two or three weeks. A better fifth piece they'd be hard pressed to find. The Quist-Tipton set had a nice variety of barroom lament: "You Win Again", "Oh Lonesome Me"; bouncy swing: "That's What I Like About the South"; and uptempo up-tempo hand-clappers: Jack's original "Tennessee Music Man", "I Saw the Light", and the venerable "Orange Blossom Special". The duo format allowed one to better perceive both Jack's richly resonant vocal quality and the ever-so-subtle nuances of Cliff's fiddle work.
