Show The Newspaper Thursday, January 28, 1982 Page C3 Cooper posts first World Cup win If ( t V y ; j Christin Cooper Christin Cooper of Sun Valley, a familiar figure in local ski racing circles since her days competing in the Intermountain Division, has made it to the top. The 23-year-old slalom and giant slalom specialist won her first World Cup race Saturday, defeating Perrine Pelen of France by 26 hundredths hun-dredths of a second in a slalom held in Ber-chtesgaden, Ber-chtesgaden, West Germany. Cooper finished second to Switzerland's Erika Hess last year in the overall slalom standings by virtue of four second-place finishes. She had recorded a string of top-ten finishes this season, but no victories, until Saturday. Satur-day. "I was beginning to think that maybe I was one of those people who are really good but never win a race," she said. "I found myself almost resigned to that fact, and then this morning I got really mad about feeling that way. So after falling yesterday yester-day (Friday) and all the fourths and sixths this year, I decided to go all out. " Teammate Tamara McKinney, recuperating from a broken hand, posted the fastest time in the first run, but fell in the second run. Other American finishers included Cindy Nelson, who tied for 10th with Italy's Maria Rosa Quario, and Heidi Preuss in 38th. Cooper's win helped strengthen her position in third place in the overall World Cup standings. On Sunday, Phil Mahre of Yakima, Washington gave America an encore performance perfor-mance when he finished first in the slalom in Wengen, Switzerland, defeating career rival Ingemar Sten-mark Sten-mark of Sweden by 29 hundredths hun-dredths of a second. The win gave Mahre 262 World Cup points and virtually guaranteed guaran-teed him of the overall title for the second year in a row. Stenmark, who had won his last four races, managed to hold onto second place in spite of a fall just before the finish in the second run. "It's too bad Stenmark fell," Mahre said after the race. "I would have liked to have won this race without incident because this is one of the classic races on the tour." Phil's twin brother Steve finished fourth behind Liechtenstein's Paul From-melt. From-melt. Both the men's and women's teams have now moved on to Schladming, Austria to compete in the World Championships, Jan. 27 through Feb. 7.
