Show Page B6 Tnnday, July 23, Beach Boys turn grass to sand with good vibrations at Parkwest By Jay Meehan "I tell you folks, It was a jamboree" Chuck Berry from "Rock V Roll Mtnic." "There's a wprld where can go. And tell my secrets to" Brian Wilson from "In My Room." "You can't go home again" Thomas Wolfe. The Beach Boys arrived at Parkwest last Sunday in a helicopter rather than a "woodie," but none of the 7,000 nostalgia buffs on the mountain seemed to mind. They were engaged in their own updated version of "beach-blanket-bingo" and they were not to be denied. It mattered little to them that Mike Love's beard sported spor-ted as much white as red, that Dennis Wilson had to be dragged away from a backstage family brawl the night before at L.A.'s Breek Theatre (he didn't make the trip to Utah) , or that the once-ebullient once-ebullient Brian Wilson continues to abide in his stoical nether world. Although transcended by them, the Beach Boys, you see, were the American Beatles. They chronicled the early '60s Southern Califor 19S1 The Newspaper nia lifestyle in a manner that had validity in Dubuque and Kansas City. Their tight harmonies had a subliminal effect even on those who, at the time, considered them passe. Twenty years later, even the once-non-believers were clapping hands overhead and singing along on every chorus. Although many probably wished they had been able to find that old pair of "huaraches" and the "baggies" they later "tie-died" "tie-died" before discarding, or even a portion of their now-diluted now-diluted '60s psyche, nothing was going to get in their way of a good time. You see, it wasn't just another Sunday on the grass, it was the Beach Boys who had come to town. The band on Sunday included in-cluded originals Mike Love on lead vocals, Brian Wilson (who invented surf-music in his now-famous bedroom and wrote almost all the group's hits) on accoustic piano and sporadic lead vocal, and Al Jardine on rhythm guitar and lead vocal. Bobby Figueroa filled in for Dennis Wilson on drums, Ed Carter was great f : ' l This six bedroom home is located directly across from the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course with no obstructions, now or in the future. Mike Maris was all over the stage on various keyboards as was Bruce "I Write the Songs" Johnston, and Ernie Napp performed on bass. With three guitars and three keyboards going constantly, con-stantly, it is obvious that their instrumental approach has attempted to keep up with the times. But the trademark Beach Boys vocal harmony remains unchanged un-changed full, much more complex than it seems, and joyous. Setting the tone with a six-or six-or seven-part harmony a cappella intro to "California Girls," they took the crowd back to that simpler era of surfboards, hot rods and school proms. Although the set seemed somewhat short, the Beach Boys delivered 26 of their more popular tunes with the carefree abandon one would expect. It was even difficult to find a lyric that couldn't be immediately recalled, and the band, excepting ex-cepting the complex and introverted in-troverted persona of Brian t It Si' l.i L Lmm f !U, i inm-i, "if Wilson, clearly had a great time. And the hits just kept on coming: "Sloop John B," "In My Room," their very first song "Surf," which became a medley with "Suring Safari," "Catch a Wave," and the quintessential quintessen-tial back-seat-ballad, "Surfer "Sur-fer Girl." Love's good-time version of "Long Tall Texan" led into in-to Brian's super lead vocal on "God Only Knows" from their popular 1966 change-of-direction LP, "Pet Sounds." Jardine's moments of microphone glory came as he led a beautiful almost "canticle," harmony on "Oh Linda" and later on when his charged vocal turned tur-ned "Help Me Rhonda" into the best rocker of the show. Not being the type to let down the "boulevard cruisers" in attendance, they salvaged from their "automotice musical garbage" gar-bage" a medley of "409," "Shut You Down," "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" and "Little Duece Coupe." And lest we forget, it was from the clay of just this 5 v "V, w- v 4 T - musical genre that "low-riders" "low-riders" were formed. Other highlights included "Be True To Your School," which featured Johnston, Jardine and Love on a dynamic three-part vocal harmony, "I Get Around," and "Surfing, U.S.A.," during which a surfboard held aloft by two local wave-stealers wave-stealers bisected the audien-stealers audien-stealers bisected the audience from top-of-hill to stage. Their encore medley contained con-tained the near-anthem "Good Vibrations," with 7,000 background singers, "Barbara Ann," the Beatles' "Back to the U.S.S.R." and "Run Run," which featured Brian Wilson, who all afternoon after-noon long seemed totally unmoved as thousands sang his songs, actually turning to view the throngs with the smallest hint of a grin. Why is genius so often accompanied accom-panied by enigmatic gloom? Oh well, ours is not to reason why, ours is to sing-along.. .and sigh.
