Show VaJt . v.; ; " ' ' f ' .' ' Subs help Muckers to win over Tahoe ByDougMcCuIloch With possibly its biggest challenge so far this season coming up this weekend, the Park City Muckers remained undefeated in Beehive Union Rugby play after taking a lackadaisical, 17-6 win over a makeshift Lake Tahoe side last Saturday Satur-day at City Park. The win left the Muckers still without a loss with five wins against two ties thus far this season. This weekend, the Muckers escape the Pioneer Days festivities in Utah to travel to the annual Ski Town Rugby Tournament in Steamboat Springs, Colo, where they will compete with eight top teams, all from ski areas. "We were playing all new guys 'cept on the front line today," said Mucker Captain Rick Phaler after Saturday's game. "We were kinda' giving some guys exposure ex-posure and experience for the tournament next week. I think now we have two guys at each position." The Lake Tahoe team included in-cluded several faces familiar to the Muckers. Only eight players made the trip from the Nevada resort town, so the side was completed com-pleted with Mucker reserves and players from the Salt Lake Griffins. So it was a surprise when the best the Muckers could manage was a 7-6 advantage after the first half. It could be explained, however, by Park City's lineup juggling and its use of reserves. Still, the Muckers realized they were meeting a serious foe early when less than a minute into the game, a reserve forward garnered a deep gash in his forehead, requiring a trip to the clinic. True to the rugger tradition, he returned late in the game, .willing and eager to play, 15 stitches and all. It was his first rugby game. Fortunately, his was the only injury experienced ex-perienced Saturday by Park City. The Muckers scored first when Mark Stokan booted a successful drop goal from 25 yards out five minutes into the game. Then about five minutes later, Kenny Tedord broke loose for a try into the far corner after passes by John Sundquist and Kevin McKay set up the play. Bruce Reid's kick for the . conversion was wide and the Muckers led, 7-0. Shortly afterwards, Ted-ford Ted-ford went in for another try. But the play was called back as a forward pass assisted in setting up the try. Then it was Lake Tahoe's turn to score as Ross Houck broke into the right corner unassisted for a try. Houck also kicked the conversion, leaving the score at 7-6 at halftime. Lake Tahoe was aided by Reid's missed conversion and two unsuccessful penalty kicks during the first half. Park City took control early in the second half as John Sundquist took the ball after a scrum and darted 75 yards down field before passing off to McKay, who went the last 10 yards for the score. The time, Reid's kick was good and the Muckers held a 13-6 lead. Dave Bodner capped off the Muckers' scoring with a hard drive through the entire Lake Tahoe side. Again, Reid missed on his conversion conver-sion attempt, this time bouncing bounc-ing the ball off the right upright. After the Steamboat tournament, tour-nament, the Muckers have the following week scheduled off before hosting an over-30s game August 8. In action the past week, the Woodhaus strengthened its position with a pair of wins. Sunday, they handed the Old Men a 16-1 loss while doing the same to the Club Tuesday, 9-4. The Club also lost 9-4 to the Black Pearl team, last Sunday, after defeating the Hat Store 12-4 the previous Tuesday. It was a slack week for Just Arnie's as its lone game against the Eating Establishment went into the books as a win by forfeit when the E.E. failed to field a full team. But it was an eventful week for the E.E. as they registered their first win (also by forfeit) against the Copperbottom Whopper Bottoms Bot-toms Monday. The Whopper Bottoms also fell to Prospector Sirloin by a 21-6 score on Sunday, while Janeaux's followed that Sabbath Day contest with a 15-7 win over the Corner Store. This week's schedule is an abbreviated one as no games are scheduled for Sunday due to the holiday. Standings listed in this week's paper are the official standings compiled by representatives of the recreation department from the umpire report forms filed after each game.
