Buddies Sonny and Duane endure drinking bouts across the border, a tested friendship, front-seat sex and the humiliation of hurts of first "love" incidents that should be a fumbling rite of passage to solid adult values, but here they lead to nothing. "You can't believe the way this town has changed, " says Sam the Lion (Ben Johnson) who stands for the last of an eroding way of life. Peter Bogdanovich's noteworthy cast featured Timothy Bottoms and Jeff Bridges as his heroes, failed protege Cybill Shephard as the town tease; Ellen Bur-styn, Bur-styn, who went on to greater things; and Oscar-winners Cloris Leachman and Johnson, John-son, who never fulfilled the O CD KUTV SHOW O CD KTVX O CD KSL HBO 0 KUED CBN 09 WTBS ESPN 3D CNN WGN r?fii 'ni.witfi-f; inu?t hr weekdays E 5:00 A.M. But "Picture Show" still stands as a classic. '2 Pieces Five Easy "Don't tell me about the good life, Elton, cause it makes me puke!" So Charlie Chaplin filmed this lampoon of Adolph Hitler (considered daring in 1940) and starred himself in two parts. As Adenoid Hynkel, dictator of Tomania (his first speaking role of any length), he parodies Hitler with a stream of public in vective that makes microphones recoil, and a In r.rl thursday C 1 52881 6:00 A.M. 3D - Sports Talk 7:00 A.M. 53) - NCAA Golf: Division II Championship 8:00 A.M. 53) - MOVIE: 'Man Trap' 9:00 A.M. 3D - NCAA Baseball: Metro Conference Championships 11:00 A.M. 53) - MOVIE: 'Perils of Pauline' 12:00 P.M. He also plays a Jewish barber bar-ber who has just recovered from a case of World War I amnesia, and naturally can't understand why all these big jack-booted lunkheads are being rude to people. Hynkel's little balloon dance with the globe of the world is only one reason this film still is unforgettable. Chaplin's slapstick is as adept as ever, and is supported suppor-ted by a number of excellent performances: Jack Oakie as the biosterous Italian dictator dic-tator Napaloni; Billy Gilbert as the Air Minister, Herring he who designs such inventions as a parachute that won't open and a porous bullet-proof vest. Okay, the premise makes for an enjoyable adventure ad-venture (even if it seems writer-director Peter Hyarns got the idea by plunking a quarter in some scriptwriter's script-writer's jukebox) but it doesn't have the grit the movie could have had as a story about futuristic blue-collar blue-collar pressures and front-office front-office corruption. Sean Connery plays an outer-space marshal regulating a mining colony on Io, one of Jupiter's moons, whose curiosity is aroused by an epidemic of mysterious, grisly suicides-miners suicides-miners ripping off their space suits and exploding in the decompressed atmosphere, at-mosphere, that sort of thing. The deaths are written off as job-related stress, but Connery and the company doctor (Frances Stern-hagen) Stern-hagen) find evidence of illegal drug traffic. The film works hard to convey the effects of the colony's claustrophobic setting, set-ting, but most of it is conveyed con-veyed through a tepid subplot sub-plot about Connery 's weepy wife (Kika Markham) who wants her son to breathe real, non-filtered air. (If the kid's outer-space upbringing is responsible for his retarded retar-ded cuteness, then we say get this kid to Earth as fast as possible). There's action aplenty in Hyams' direction, and Connery Con-nery is a convincing hero. But I think "Outlands" will be remembered as much for the repeated "blooper" in which Connery's name (O'Niel) is spelled two different dif-ferent ways on his name tag. - Ross Bagley 33) - ESPN Sports Center 51 - Overnight Desk 12:45 A.M. 51 - Mike Douglas 1:00 A.M.
