Park City Justice of the Peace James B. Kilby presided over the Wednesday Wed-nesday afternoon hearing in which Mary June Kryger, 34, was charged with the attempted attempt-ed murder of her airline pilot husband, Gene. Mrs. Kryger was arrested August 3 by local police officials after af-ter three intensive days of investigation. According to Park City Police Chief Mike Crowley, Mrs. Kryger allegedly contracted con-tracted with a "hit man" to kill her husband in hopes of becoming the benefactor of what she believed to be a $150,000 insurance policy. Informed In-formed sources say that figure could actually have been much higher. Crowley recalled that he received word from California Califor-nia authorities July 31 that an informant told the West Coast police that he had been hired by Mrs. Kryger to kill her husband. The woman allegedly had paid the informant in-formant a $500 deposit on a $5,000 contract. Once authorities were informed of the plot, conversations between be-tween Mrs. Kryger and the intormant were tape recorded. recor-ded. In those conversations, Mrs. Kryger allegedly asked that the left front tire of her husband's car be "disturbed," "distur-bed," causing a fatal accident. ac-cident. The informant apparently ap-parently told Mrs. Kryger he would be using a local contact con-tact to help fulfill the contract, con-tract, and the Park City authorities siezed the opportunity oppor-tunity to use an undercover agent to thwart the plot. A Salt Lake City agent was planted in a local hotel room and arrangements were made to meet with Mrs. Kryger August 3 to finalize the details. Outside, Crowley, Detective Lieutenant Rob Berry and officer Lloyd Evans waited in police vehicles and monitored the conversation. On tape are the final arrangements, the police said. The murder was to occur oc-cur two days following the meeting. After agreeing to the final arrangements, Mrs. Kryger left the hotel room, at which time detective Berry approached ap-proached her and informed her she was under arrest. Mrs. Kryger was taken to the Salt Lake City-County Jail, where her husband posted the $25,000 bail to gain her release. At Wednesday's hearing, Mrs. Kryger, who claimed financial inability to provide her own legal defense, was represented by state-appointed state-appointed attorney Kenneth L. Brown. The prosecuting attorney was Assistant Summit County Attorney, Terry Christiansen. Judge Kilby said witnesses for the state at the hearing were Lieutenant Berry and Detective Daryle Ondronk from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. After hearing the two and a half hours of taped conversation and testimony from the officers, of-ficers, Kilby determined there was sufficient evidence eviden-ce to bind Mrs. Kryger over for trial. The judge futher commented commen-ted that by law Mrs. Kryger was permitted to make a statement at the hearing but she waived the right under recommendation by her attorney. at-torney. The defense presented presen-ted no witnesses. Although the tape recordings record-ings were heard Wednesday, Wed-nesday, they were not admitted admit-ted as evidence, a right reserved by the prosecuting Equipment Sales Clerks Clothing Sales Clerks Rental Clerks Binding Mechanics limbec? If admitted ad-mitted as evidence, the tapes would have to be turned over to Judge Kilby, who then would remand them into the custody of the district court clerk. It is not unusual, the judge said, for the attorney to reserve the right to keep them in his possession until the trial. Judge Kilby said Mrs. Kryger will be tried in third district court at a date to be set by the district court calendar clerk. If the trial is set before January 1, district court Judge Ernest Baldwin will preside. A new district court judge will be appointed after the new year. The charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to' commit murder are first degree felonies and punishable by up to life imprisonment im-prisonment and a $10,000 fine. 7?
