The Park City Ski Club sponsored the downhill event, which started with mandatory training on Friday Fri-day and saw all classes racing on Saturday and Sunday. The 22-gate downhill course was set on Payday, at the Park City Resort. Many Park City Ski Team members mem-bers fared well in the weekend competition as the home court advantage seemed to help the local racers. The Park City team captured 15 top-three spots. Saturday morning promised prom-ised excellent conditions with sunshine and a newly groomed Payday slope. But later in the day,, snow and light fog set in and didn't leave until after Sunday's race. Intermittent fog and snow made visibility poor for the Pee-Wee class on Saturday Satur-day and the entire field Sunday. Pine bows were spread on the course during Sunday's race to help the racers identify the course line. The fastest time on the Payday downhill Saturday was 1 minute, 10 seconds, Sunday was considerably slower at 1 minute, 16 seconds. Both runs were made by ski team coach Bob Marsh before the race began, be-gan, to insure safe course conditions. Wet snow and fog made Sunday a wax and courage race for all competitors. compet-itors. The fastest time posted in competition for both days was Park City Ski Team member Dan Close at 1 minute, 11 seconds Saturday and 1 minute, 16 seconds Sunday. Following close behind be-hind was Dave Bonnie, Park City, in second place and the local club's bright young hopeful, Matias Alvarez, surprised the field with a third place finish Sunday, only two seconds behind Close Susan Knutsen, another competitor from Park City, skied her way into 3rd place in the Novice girls class for her best finish of the season. Tory Pillinger, Polly Ivers and Michelle Buck finished 4th. 5th and 6th. respectively. respect-ively. Sunday proved to be a better day for the local Novice girls when Dory-Downer, Dory-Downer, Tory Pillinger and Michelle Buck all bettered Jere Calmes, their times to capture ne silver medal for Dory and the Bronze for Tory while Michelle moved up to 5th. Malcolm Vance was two seconds behind the winner in Novice boys to take home the second place trophy. Independent Inde-pendent Rich Hibbard was the winner with a time of 116.95. Park City's Andrea Peterson Peter-son and Erin Calmes sustained sus-tained their impressive records. rec-ords. Calmes took second place among the Pee-Wee girls and Peterson finished third on Saturday. Sunday's results showed Peterson turning in the fastest time of the day, 67.23, with Calmes taking 3rd with a time of 70.76. Spencer Eccles was the top finisher for Park City in the Pee-Wee boys class. He posted "i r4lh place oh Sunday with teammates Greg Tesoro, Brad Holmes, Jason Lawson, Alex Hogle, Mark Tesoro, Jere Calmes finishing 15, 19, 20, 21, 23, respectively. Approximately 200 competitors compet-itors from the Southern Division of the Tntermount-ain Tntermount-ain USSA competed in the downhill event.
