Moscow The 25th anniversary of the death of Josef Stalin passed in silence Sunday as the .Soviet Union made no mention of the occasion. Stalin's name failed to appear in newspapers or on television in a nation that usually brings out the banners on commemorative days. Once considered the "Genius of Mankind" and "Father of the Homeland,'' Stalin's place in Soviet history faded during the "de-Stalinaza-tion" period initiated by his successor, Nikita Is Khrushchev. r.i ; Moscow Cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and is Georgy Grechko Saturday shattered the four-year-old space endurance record set by three American astronauts aboard Skylab 4. The Soviet duo rocketed into orbit December 10 and surpassed the previous record of 84 days hours after they were joined in space by an international crew. The arrival of a Czechoslo-vakian Czechoslo-vakian and another Soviet cosmonaut aboard the Salyut 6 space lab could give Romanenko and Grechko a psychological boost that could allow-the allow-the pair to stay in space past the 100 day mark, according to Western experts. I I NATIONAL Washington Striking coal miners overwhelmingly overwhelm-ingly rejected a proposed contract Sunday and on Monday President Carter invoked the Taft-Hartley Act in an effort to force miners back to work. Mine owners expressed hope that the Taft-Hartley Act would work; United Mine Workers President Arnold Miller said earlier he didn't like it but would abide by it; and reaction from miners reportedly was mixed. Administration Administra-tion officials said they hoped to make a formal request for the back-to-work by Thursday. "My responsibility is to protect the health and safety of the American public and I intend to do so." President Carter said in a statement issued from the White House. Lawrenceville, Georgia Pornography magnate Larry Flynt was shot in the stomach and critically wounded Monday outside a courthouse where he was being tried on obscenity charges. A gunman reportedly jumped into car and sped off after the attack on Flynt, who recently declared he had found God. Among Flynt's visitors was Ruth Carter Stapleton, President Carter's sister, whom Flynt has credited with his "conversion." A Button Gwinnett Hospital administrator said the publisher and his attorney, who also was critically wounded, "were in surgery for more than four hours. ..both are quite critical. ..but somewhat stable." New York In a soon-to-be-published book, a noted American science writer claims that a child has been created in a test tube by the process known as "cloning." In the book, "In His Image:The Cloning of a Man," David Rorvik claims that in 1975 scientists created a human baby from a single male cell in a laboratory. He says the cloned child is now a healthy 14-month-old boy, who was produced by scientists for a millionaire who wanted an exact duplicate of himself. Many respected scientists called the claim a thoax but. said if it were Jrue ,it marked JheT succesfuT completion ..of , , the, most dangerous' j 'medical-experiment' 'in 'history. Dr. Lie Be Cavalieri, a molecular biologist at the Sloan; Kettering Cancer Research Institute, expressed serious doubt that the feat had actually been accomplished but added that if the story were true,' "It would be worse than Hitler, a thousand times worse. The whole idea is horrible." In his book, Rorvik refuses to name those who took part in the experiment or the millionaire. He calls the boy "Billy" and says he will not reveal his identity in order to insure him a normal life. If Billy exists, he should develop into an exact duplicate of his single parent and would even have the same fingerprints. To date, only carrots, sea urchins and frogs are know to have been successfully cloned. Phoenix Arizona Gov. Wesley Bolin died of an apparent heart attack early Saturday after being in office for only four months. He was 68. Bolin was found dead at about 7 a.m. by his wife, Marian, in the bathroom of their North Phoenix home. Washington William Miller was confirmed by the Senate Friday as chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. The chairman of Textron, Inc., was approved" by a voice vote with Sen. William Proxmire the only "no" among the eight senators present for the vote.
