Main Street T 649-8051 The wild river flows through a deep, black rapid-filled rapid-filled gorge. A rising moon reflects light off the deep canyon walls. The subdued, distant roar of a small rapid is all that breaks the still March air. I huddle closer to the warmth of my small fire and imagine tomorrow's battle with the canyon's famous rapids. With the image of silt-filled water and house-sized boulders in my mind, the yipping of a lone coyote echos off the high cliffs. clif-fs. Before the last note fades the whole canine chorus breaks loose and fills the canyon with their haunting melody. Located in the east-central portion of the state, this thrrieen mile stretch of wild river is the heart of a proposed 14,000 acre wilderness. wilder-ness. Westwater is currently being studied for possible inclusion in-clusion in the National Wild Rivers System. For most, the rapid-filled river is Westwater's main attraction. The canyon's numerous rapids, although less formidable than some in Grand Canyon, pose a challenge to even the most seasoned boatmen. They go by the name of Skull, Funnel Falls, Last Chance and others. The Colorado has carved deep into some of the oldest rock exposed in North America. This ancient black rock is over a billion years old. The black rock is capped by red and purple shales of the Chinle formation, a stream floodplain deposits laid down over 270 "million years ago. A massive 550-foot 550-foot cliff of Wingate Sandstone San-dstone covers the Chinle and dominates the scenery throughout the canyon. Because of the short length of the canyon and easy access, ac-cess, Westwater is now one of the more heavily used sections sec-tions of the Colorado River in Utah. While the Bureau of Land Management, the agency in charge of administering ad-ministering the area, is inclined in-clined to restrict camping use in the canyon, there is considerable pressure from boaters to allow unlimited day use of this Whitewater section. Such an approach is fine for the thrill seeking throng, but it adversely affects af-fects those who desire . solitude along with their , Whitewater experience. Westwater is the home of wildlife such as cougar, deer, egrets, hawks and ' eagles, Canada geese, as '' well as numerous other "species.e Wildlife , 1; ,is ,. omethingfew peopleea ia-n. While the river is the main attraction of the canyon, the many side canyons and mesas provide an excellent opportunity for hiking and exploring, particularly in the fall and winter months. The high canyon rims offer some of the most striking views found anywhere in the state. There is even a huge arch that is seldom seen by anyone but the most adven-tureous adven-tureous hikers. Just what would "wild river" and "wilderness" status accomplish for West-water? West-water? Designation as a wild river would guarantee that this portion of the Colorado would remain free flowing and in its present primitive condition. Wilderness classification would ensure that the surrounding side canyons and mesas, all im-jportant im-jportant wildlife habitat, would be preserved3 "in its present natural condition for future generations to enjoy as wilderness. -v As iff rf 1 1 f J .1 VSt o "h- I 1 PLUMBING Emporium Plumbing Installation and repairs, drain and sewer lines cleaned licensed and bonded 649-8511 649-8505 -GENERAL CONTRACTORS- Groves Construction P.O.Box 780 1016 Park Ave. 649-7575 Custom building and design, remodeling concrete work, crane rental MAINTENANCE- Park City Maintenance Carpet cleaning, window washing, house cleaning, etc. Full janitorial service 649-9055,Suite 2010, Mt.
