Hold on. There's hope in Houston. Just across town some very familiar Utah faces keep popping pop-ping up, so frequently, in fact, that the Rockets now possess the second best record in the 22-team 22-team NBA. More significant and true to their name, with only 12 games remaining on a grueling 82-game schedule they're coming on like the third stage of a big Saturn, winning 10 of their last 11. Tom Nissalke and Del Harris, the coaching tandem during the late great days of the Utah Stars, have turned it around as they say. Taking control of a franchise rumored to be transferable andor saleable-it was to local banks-the winning win-ning Rockets have increased attendance 2,400 per outing over last year's figures. Nissalke accomplished ac-complished this task by continually shuffling his lineup, moving players to different positions and tailoring new plays to suit his alternations. A task which should merit coach of the year accolades. ac-colades. Former Utah Star Eugene (Goo as in Boo) Kennedy and six year pro Mike Newlin, a product of the University of Utah have made significant contributions; Goo by just staying with the club after being signed, waived, and resigned, and Newlin by starting at guard, relieving at swing man, and now starting at the small forward position in Nissalke's leap-froging lineup. Surly there must be someone else, right? Exactly! ! ! A young fellow who should only be a collegiate senior at Maryland next year, Moses Malone, finally settled in Houston after being shuffled from Utah to St. Louis to Portland to Buffalo, all within the last 15 months, the 22-jyear-old is beginning to show his stuff to the, NBA. In fact, all of his 10 first half points against Kareem and the Lakers on Feb. 27 came on just that, stuffs. In a game pairing the same opponents ts four days later Moses tallied 26 to Kareems 23 and his 19 rebounds came within five of the Lakers' team total. Even though he has recently developed an accurate ac-curate turn around jumper, Moses specializes in offensize rebounds. While averaging just over 30 minutes a game, the man-child from Petersburg, Va. High School is leading the NBA in that category. Not only leading, but barring injury, this kid will bust the league record of 365 set by Paul Silas. Nissalke thinks more is in store. Believing Moses to be at only 50 percent of his peak, the coach with the drought-stricken humor feels Malone in time could be in a class with Bill Russell. But for now Moses will just have to settle set-tle for being quicker than his long distance protege. No doubt the fact Malone is home with his old coach and is being tutored slowly has contributed con-tributed to his settlement in the Southwest. All Moses Malone wanted to do was settle down and Houston didn't have to sell the fort to capture him, just the franchise.
