Show Wednesday, February 16, 1977 Page 5 Hankerings Lively Show raw By Hank Louis The books of matches planted in all directions around the Lodge, the Inn, the shops, restaurants and bars-everywhere along the tree-lined, campus-like walkways and paths between the tradition-infested buildings-read on their front covers: Sun Valley, America's Foremost Ski Resort. The way the P.R. corps (which, face it, includes in-cludes even the cafeteria busgirls, as well as those donned officially with titles) treated this reporter while there last week to observe the final three races of the Farah Canadian-American Canadian-American Trophy series, he need not have been reminded by matchbook faces, and is now left unable to add to nor subtract from the ski area's self-proclaimed subtitle. He would only underscore under-score the word Foremost, and would do so triply. And what about the group (much more populated than anyone would think) And what about the group (much more populated than anyone would think) which travels around the United States and Canada like a racing cir-cus-the skiers in their different team vans, the coaching staff, the administrators and media wizards in Ski Team Subarus, the reps in promotion-painted vans and trucks full of tools, vices; Workmates, new skis, new bindings, and the huge trucks that haul each competitor's ten or twelve pairs of skis? ijj They, too, believe me, are deserved oXthjad-i, f?! jective employed by Sun Valley. They are'tirely "H some o America's foremost human beings. B Sure, in confidence, the racers make snide y remarks about certain hard-ass policies of a cer-tain cer-tain coach or Ski Team staff member. Sure, vice-versa, vice-versa, the people in charge will speak of drop-si: drop-si: ping a kid or scratch heads about why so-and-so can't speed it up or why he consistantly Did Not Finish-and they can aim at other coaches, too. h- Sure, these same honchos even bark at the media wizard if coverage isn't enough or is slightly garbled from communication breakdown or if the results aren't lickety-split in their hands. And cr sure, the kids scream and yell and rant and rave at the reps if they were jetting down just fast and lr. fine and a binding released for no apparent r reason. -J:. But this is a group zipping around vast miles of two countries with accommodations sometimes worse than those of an always egged and tomatoed third-rate vaudeville show; for two months eating, sleeping and van-sitting for hours r.:on end cross-billboard-country together like p mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and dogs on fl the way to distant relatives. And, worse, there's the stress of competition, of competing against iyour very room- or seat-mate-always aback 2 your mind that if you don't beat these friends Lc: you'll be back home reading about their adven-Lx' adven-Lx' tures in Europe or at other stops on the World ;. Cup circuit. So, some of the petty bickering which really is b infinitessimal, with this in mind, seems even y more so, if possible. U Plus-and this is a Sawtooth Mountain size 'zl plus-this reporter was sharing food and tales :. with this hot-hot skiing group ( members of which iS outwardly proclaim their prowess about half as r much as half the recreational skiers at any given r: resort) at the finale of this Most Presitgious racing circuit in North America, and at sunny rSun Valley. After the iced-over East these '- travelers felt as though they were in some sort of :C pre-heaven-they were whooping it up, smiling L and loose. r On nights before the race, though, you found r coaches and reps in the ski rooms fine-tuning and 'f, waxing ski after ski until midnight or past, and r the racers in bed by eight or nine. Most rr remarkable for college-or any age kids holed up t in Sun Valley. I Dedicated, confident, thoughtful-a little t rowdy at times, a little cocky, ask any coach and I he'll tell you about "musts"-talented, strong ;.- and going places are these kids. A great credit to c. skiing. '-- Thank-you, Farah from El Paso, for helping better our North American skiers' World Cup odds. Obviously, I was impressed. At The Silver Wheel bv MegO'Shaughnessy The Silver Wheel Theatre is packing a surprise behind those melodrama marquees these days. Winter Run 1977, is lively entertainment, a medley of song, dance, and comedy. The Entertainment Company Com-pany is a sparkling group of performers, infectious in their fervor. The show opens with spotlight on the dancers, in a number that fetches our attention from the start. The lead passes quickly to Michael Clapier, whose easy stage presence makes him the evening's perfect host. Mike and Gary Neilson provide the schtik that propels the show-Mike as straight man to Gary's antics an-tics and versatile characterizations, charac-terizations, in routines that bring a wince at corny humor to expertly timed pieces such as the favorite Who's on First. Most successful suc-cessful is the hilarious rapid-fire rapid-fire dialogue between them, Gary as an intoxicated phone caller who muddles the flight information from an affable airline's ticket man. The ladies seem to create their own glow, especially Debbie Conde and Barbara Neal who weave harmony and melody in a song about a well matched pair. There is a touch of glamour in the show that is refreshing here in casual Park City, and when these ladies saunter through the theatre, in jewels and evening gowns, tyarraing ,;Up ibe. .audience, . ""Ve'iVapprecftrtivetif the Hie in live entertainment. Mike Clapier brings the audience closer with the intimate quality of his works We feel as if we're beginning to be familiar with each of the performers. The dancing which is always up tempo and vibrant, brings together the energies of nearly everyone in the company. The talents of the cast in this area are best displayed in a number from Chorus Line, in which men and women alternate in quick segments that are compelling in their exuberance. They're going for it. In a word, that's it. These young people are sparing not an ounce in their delivery throughout the show . It's a zealous production that is put together from the time and energy that the cast and crew devote to the show and to each other after already full days as workers or students in Sail Lake and surrounding areas Lemuel Harsh, who directed direc-ted Winter Kun. has provided. a Inendly showcase to frame and highlight the abilities of the cast, and together with Lee Shaw. the company's manager, has fed the enthusiasm en-thusiasm that communicates com-municates itself to the audience. It's a contagious experience. The energy snowballs-more tangible, as all good vibes, from the front row seats. Luanne Lauritzen s sensitive sen-sitive accompaniment on piano ties the performance together and acts as an effective ef-fective backdrop to the clarity of the vocals. Ingra Draper and Alan White are responsible for the set design, and Lakay Ashcroft created the costumes. The company is completed by dancers Nancy Barker, Suzy Stone, Wendy Erickson, Bruce Durrant and Jeff Herrara. Winter Run 1977 will continue con-tinue at the Silver Wheel Theatre four nights a week through April. Wednesday and Thursday at 8.:0 p.m. and Friday and Saturday following the melodrama, the show begins at 1 1 :00 p.m. The Entertainment Company Com-pany has clearly succeeded in bringing Park City a distinct mode of diversion, and we can look forward to the company's residence at the Silver Wheel in summer-stock.
