To insure a lasting record of this year's Bicentennial commemoration in the Beehive State, a cylindrical aluminum time capsule will be sealed, sometime this year, to be opened July 4, 2075. The contents could then be displayed during the Tricentennial. The , Utah American Revolution Bicentennial Commission is inviting residents of Utah to suggest items that could be sealed inside the capsule. UARBC Executive Director Richard P. Sorensen today said, "Since the purpose of this time capsule is to preserve a record of our Bicentennial celebration in Utah, it is fitting that we have input from tKee of tSe State as to what we include.; Accordingly; we welcome all suggestions. First of all, one of the most talked about singers in Park City music circles, the great Emmylou Harris, will be appearing in concert July 28 at the Terrace in Salt Lake City. With vocal credits on Gram Parsons' final two albums and Bob Dylan's most recent uesire LP, flls. Harris has set the country and pop music communities on their collective ears. But of course, her finest musical outings to date have been y her.two albums for Reprise: i: Pieces of the Sky, and Elite Hotel. She'll be appearing with a five piece backup back-up group on a bill that includes the. Weber River Wranglers and the much heralded Jerry Riopelle. That's Wednesday, July 28, at the Terrace. Tickets are available at the C'est Bon. Utah State University is putting the final touches on their annual production of The West: America's Odyssey, which is scheduled to run between July 30 ind August 7. This year's spectacular will include besides the nightly Spectrum show, a "frontier street', ' and a "Great West Fair", the Deseret String Band, who will undoubtedly add a little authenticity to the proceedings with their music of the pioneer period. In an article datelined Gonzales, Texas, the site of Willie Nelson's 4th Annual Fourth of July Picnic. Gerry Wood reports that 'some 80,000 country music fans" gathered on 1,000 of the dustiest and hottest acres on earth for about 24 hours of music, confusion, celebration, inspiration, sensuality, snakebites, onstage on-stage brilliance, off stage brutality, gentleness, corruption, honesty, broken amps; broken bones, beer, dope, life, death, good people and bad vibes." The article appeared in the July 17 issue of Billboard magazine. The fatatily was an accidential drowning. Appearing at this years event besides Willie, were: Leon Russell, Jerry Jeff Walker, Steve Fromholz, Asleep at the Wheel, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Floyd Tillman, David Allan Coe, Bobby Bare, Rusty Wier, Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Wyli Hubbard, B.W. Stevenson, Linda Hargrove and George Jones! The biggest surprise ot tne day was music fans are first of all reception accorded Jones a traditional country star, by the young "outlaw audience. Which onhrgpes to. prove, I suppe?ta W flSsiver , ' The Elvis album referred to in the opening paragraph is intitled The Sun Sessions. (RCA APMl-1675) APMl-1675) and contains sixteen cuts recorded by Same E. Phillips on his Sun record lable in Memphis between July 1954 and July 1955. Phillips, who once bragged that he would make a billion dollars if he could find a young white singer who could sound and feel like a Negro, ended up selling both Presley's recording contract and the tapes that make up this album to RCA Victor for only $35,000. Phillips went on to sign Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and others to his Sun Lable. All of them were to move (xi on following the expiration or sale of their initial recording contracts. Anyone interested in how a young truck driver for the Crown Electric Company, with the help of Phillips and musicians Scotty More, Bill Black and J.D. Fontana, was able to fuse two parallel American music forms (white Country and western, swing with black urban and country blues) into that devilish "rock and roll" should acquire this historic LP. For, as has been noted before, everyone from the Beatles, Creedence, and Dylan throughJay Williams andRon Corbridge have been influenced by Elvis Presley and the Sun sound. rONDUE Tuss. thru Sun -10:30 of man W2. and the daily appearance of reportedly the spirited "country " music fans. |
