Drawing on his experience as an "aquatic engineer" when he washed dished for a living in Boulder, Colorade, many years ago actor and environmental activist Robert Redford addressed a gathering of the Consulting Engineers Council at the C'est Bon Friday night. Redford cited the "recurring sadness of what we seem to be losing" which he said is the result of the "forward thrust of development which . is not mindful of what we had in the past." The actor said that while "wondering about the notion that we have to trade off heritage for progress" he became interested in the alternatives of solar energy and energy conservation. A shift in emphasis from capital intensive to labor intensive production of energy and from nonrenewable non-renewable to renewable sources of energy was advocated ad-vocated by Redford. By way of illustration he compared the use of the sun and tides tc fossil fuels as a means tc meet future energy needs. "I'm personally very interested in-terested in solar energy," Redford said. He asserted that Utah should be on the 'vanguard ; of energy development" but that no dfort has been made in this state to utilize solar power even though it's on the solar belt, especially southern Itah. ; . "I see nothing being done and it concerns me," he said. Iifw-JL U4'",','''""',w'i' I - ' f I ' ' I I Dustin Hoffman The actor noted that many in the hands of engineers," states are spending from $75,000 to $250,000 to attract solar exploration while Utah has sent $6,000. Redford said the political leadership is tied to "old fashion methods of energy development" and asked, "What good is a society based on a system of waste?" "Our lifestyle is very much the guest speaker observed. "It's so exciting what the engineer can do." "If I were you I would feel wcited and positive about the new fields of technology," he added. r During a question and answer period Redford theorized that the demise of the Kaiparowits power project was due to economic reasons and although "blame was cast toward environmentalists, en-vironmentalists, it was not the red hot deal it was purported pur-ported to be." ; He added that opposition to the giant electric generating i plant came from many dif-1 ferent interest groups and: that the project "drew attention at-tention to the fact that we weren't prepared for an impact of that size." "We never did find out the ; actual cost of the project," he said. Stating that nuclear fission as an energy source "will self-destruct" because it is "to costly" and because there are "too many questions to be answered," Redford said coal will be a more important source. But he also conjectured con-jectured that the economic feasibility of solar energy is "much closer than we're being told!" In addition he mentioned hydrogen, nuclear fusion and geothermal force as promising energy sources. On his way to the silver Porsche waiting in the parking lot, the leading man ; was asked if he had considered con-sidered entering Utah politics to advance his stands on energy and conservation. "I'm having too much fun acting," he replied less than ernestly," and besides, when would I have time to ski." I Lccn, Tender V POT ROAST s.rBf .. 59 1 ROUND DONE ROAST i.
