Give someone an extremely hard time this week. by Quicksilver Its almost normal to underestimate the ability of an actor to shape a film (for better or worse) within the limits imposed by the part. The usual tendency is to look at the actor as a mere pawn of the director, contributing nothing but his body to the part. The Missouri Breaks tends to show the flaw in the logic of that type of thinking. Marlon Brando's portrayal of a regulator made the film unique among westerns. What makes an actor capable of elevating the film above other movies in the genre? Two of the characteristics an actor seems to need are originality and presence. Nicholson and Brando make an excellent comparison of two actors who are considered among the finest alive today, yet have a vast difference in the manner in which they deliver a role. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two actors is in the area of originality the ability to assimilate a vast number of common human gestures and use them in a way that will create a totaly unique character. Brando, perhaps because of his ability to improvise, is able to use gestures that we've all seen before, yet seldom make their way to the screen. His performance is usually something special, a character that could be imitated (and will be imitated) but never duplicated. Nicholson tends to be a man who builds a character from a stock repartee of gestures. His performances can tend to melt together, as one trys to remember what character he played said that particular line. While many of Brando's characters are easily imitated because of their identifiable nature of the portrayal, Nicholson's characters are performances that could have been carried by other actors with as large a selection of mannerisms to call upon. Gene Hackman and Al Pacino are just two actors who could have pulled off Nicholsons part in The Missouri Breaks. In the area of presence, Nicholson and Brando seem to have more in common than in the area of of originality. Presence, that almost impossible to define ability to project your character larger man life, is a characteristic that is needed to overcome deficiencies inherent in the film media. Presence does not mean classical acting talent, as people who seem to have it are as far afield as Orson , Wells and Mick Jagger. It seems to be an innate ' characteristic. Still, even Jack Nicholson admits that the ground shook for weeks before Brando arrived. That's presence. This week's schedule: i Wednesday Timberhaus vs.Alpine Club, 6 p.m.. Old Men vs Spencers Auto Sales, 7:15 p.m.. Sunday Timberhaus vs Sirloin Saloon, 12 noon. Park City Ventures vs Special Dinners, 1:30 p.m. Spencers Auto Sales vs. Alpine Club, 3 p.m. Old Men vs. Park City Ski Club, 4:30 p.m. For instance, the most notable flaw in The Missouri Breaks seems to be that the character who dominates the film so convincingly from the first frame that he appears, eventually loses. One character's portrayal seems to come so close to being omnipotent that his destruction in the end seems to be either a cop-out mistake or a metaphysical statement about the vulnerability of God. It's best to believe that ' the former attitude is correct mainly because the, director of the film forgot to compensate for one man's incredible presence. It seems odd that the film industry is not trying to develop (find?) more actors and actresses that have originality and presence. The industeries present system of developing 'bankable' stars will probably only lead to the overexposure and the eventual bankruptcy of their talent. The only actors and actresses ac-tresses who are truly worth the enormous sums being Stret paid today are those who have originallity and Utah presence among their talents, because they are the r nly people who can transcend banality to create a lasting character. So many films are made that sooner or later start blending together. The director of the film is but one factor that can elevate the flick above the masses. Brando has re-emphasized that the acting should not be taken for granted, that an actors contribution can Estab. 1869 be a major factor in the success of a film. Monday Old Men vs. Special Dinners, 6 p.m. Timberhaus vs. Park City Ventures, 7:15 p.m. MUSIC NOTES ByJayMeehan There is something about the way the three syllables roll off the tongue: Mose Allison. They flow easily, unforced; yet give a hint of complex simplicity.a paradox, we shall be experiencing soon. Marshall Marinakis and his C'est Bon Entertainment Lounge are bringing the melodious dissonance, the jazz blues, the off-handedly presented deeply rooted philosophy of the piano poet to Park City this coming Friday and Saturday nights. Mose Allison is coming to our town and he'll relax your body and stimulate your mind. The memories lie just below the surface, easily accessible. It was 1962 in the Army-golf town of . Augusta on Georgia's South Carolina border. About ten of us, brought into camaraderie by the enlistment and draft processes, spent a couple of weeks trying to locate a saloon sympathetic to our taste and demeanor. Securing a quarter from the loose change scattered on the bar of one such possible haunt, I approached the Juke-box. "J-5 and J-6" offered the young bartender. I slid the two-bits in the hole and grinned widely as I read the titles beside the letter- number code' Mose Allison "Parchman Farm"; "Don't Get Around Much Anymore". We had found our bar. Returning to California in 1965 with a relatively large collection of the jazz-of-the-time, I met quite a few folks with a similar musical bent. The talk was of Miles Davis, Coltrane, Herbie Mann, Thelonious Monk, Brubeck, Getz, Jimmie Smith, Willie Bobo, Mongo Santamaria, and their contemparies. When ever one of them hit the Lighthouse of Shelly's Mann-Hole, Mann-Hole, a few of us would check it out. But when word spread that Mose was arriving on the scene, everybody went. You had to get mere early, and even then if you did get in for the first set, more often than not you'd be sitting in the back row. (If a few folks split during the first intermission, we'd make a somewhat subtle mad-dash for the closer seats.) It is his totally unique style and his tasteful synthesis syn-thesis of varied musical and philosophical idioms that cause people to first attend a Mose Allison concert. But it is the overpowering humanism evident in this great artist that keeps ya coming back. It didn't matter if he was interpreting another's tune, such as his great version of Willie Dixon's "Seventh Son", or getting into your mind with something like his own "Everybody's Crying Mercy", the result was the same: you were always blown out by the genius of the arrangment. It was as if he had taken the funky ilsjon to his vocal box, taking piano blues to its highest logical extension; the jazz interplay between the voice and the piano being governed alternately by the subject matter and the particular blues genre being utilized. And what timing, which is what its all about anyway. I suppose if I can believe that Dylan was in Salt Lake, I can believe Mose Allison is actually going to perform in Park City. This Friday and Saturday night at the C'est Bon Lounge it will all come together. Long live Mose! . MOSS Expresses Concern Over Bill MsdO "Low rates are a tij reason wetethe largest home insurer. Moss said June 9 he has serious reservations on the Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act, known as the Humphery-Hawkins Bill. "While I wholeheartedly support the objective of more jobs, I am concerned that the approach which my good friend and distinguished colleague from Minnesota has proposed has not taken into account the inflationary factors," he said. Moss said a recent Congressional. Budget Office study indicated that the budget costs of the bill are indeterminant, but large. He said the study also indicates that while enactment of the bill could result in lower unemployment, there would be a risk of substantially higher inflation. v "I also think we must be , very careful to limit the government role in planning and decision-making affecting af-fecting our lives and in'-fringing in'-fringing upon the private; sector, of the economy," he said.
