Show Wednesday, May 19, 1976 ..B8THB83 .-Roland S f Ryifi)dlyp Lady Elks Elect New Officer Page 6 3 By Bill Roland Quite a few interesting events took place in the world of sports this past week, most notably the Montreal Canadians returned hockey's coveted Stanley Cup back to Canada by defeating the defending champion Philadelphia Flyers in four games. Although it was a sweep for Montreal, all four games were close and most hockey experts feel the Canadians are simply "a cut above" last year's champions, the Philadelphia Flyers. In motor racing, Johnny Rutherford won the pole position for this year's Indy 500 when he averaged nearly 189 miles per hour for the four laps. Janet Guthrie has been getting a tremendous amount of press coverage since she has now passed her rookie qualification tests and will attempt to become the first woman to be among the starting grid come May 30. Her best times have been laps around 171 mph, but she will need to be around 180 mph to qualify this weekend for one of the remaining 14 spots. Personally I don't believe she'll make it and quite frankly I'm not rooting for her either. Physically, she is not strong enough to wrestle with an Indy car for 500 miles on race day. Secondly, I don't believe she has enough mental stamina to stay sharp for the duration of the race. On account of these facts, her presence on the Speedway Speed-way would present an additiona hazard to the stronger and more competent racers. Elsewhere in motor racing, Austria's Mike Lauda, the defending world Grand Prix champion, won the Belgian Grand Prix Sunday and took a commanding lead in defense of his crown. Of course by now you are aware that Elocutionist came from far behind Saturday to win the Preakness Stakes . This was to be a two-horse race between favorite Honest Pleasure and Derby winners Bold Forbes, but somebody forgot to tell Elocutionist and bis jockey Johnny Lively. They ran a good race and as the favorites beaded for the barn, the Black-eyed Susans were draped over the winner. Turning to basketball, the playoffs are still going on despite the fact that we are a fortnight away from June 1. The Phoenx Suns stunned the defending champion Gold State Warriors 94-86 Sunday and won the series 4-3 that lifted them into the NBA's championship finals. - In the other series, the Boston Celtics led the Cleveland Cavaliers 3-2 going into last night's sixth game in Cleveland. Last week, Boston Coach Tom Hein-sohn Hein-sohn was slashed with beer and eggs by the Cleveland fans. Rumor has it that the Celtic bench warmers are bringing seltzer bottles with them so they can retaliate ! In the ABA, Julius Irving led the New York Nets to the chaiDpioDshi. displaying Jiis . spectacular skills that haveilneforhia ThftDver Nuggets were the victsms cf his tenacious onslaught. Last, but certainly not least, Lee Trevino is once again the happy go hick "Merry Mexican" as he held off a gritty Mike Morley Sunday to win the Colonial National Invitational Golf Tournament, his first win ever in his home state of Texas. After a 14 month victory drought, Trevino played some superb golf over the long and demanding Colonial Country Chib. Feeling confident and free-wheelin' once again, look for Lee to be right up there in this week's Danny Thomas Classic in Memphis, Tenn. Til next week, enjoy your favorite spring sport in the warm sunshine. - mil fiiimten J I m. With the coming of warmer days and school's summer vacation, a young person, as I well remember, sometimes becomes a little careless. We feel a few words of caution should be expressed. Skateboards: Skateboards should be used on sidewalks and designated playgrounds, not on the streets. The reason for this is rather elementary. elemen-tary. The skateboard jockey will lose everytime in the event of a collision with a sheetmetal protected automobile driver. (Levi's have their limitations). Bicycles: When bicycles are to be used as a form of transportation, please, obey all traffic rules and regulations. A bicycle provides very little more protection than does avskateboard in the event of trouble. Motor Bikes : Use your heads ! Unless you are a licensed driver, with an inspected (safety and licensed motorcycle, ) please, stay off city roads. The reasons for this are too numerous to discuss, but civil liability in the event of an accident should be among the leading. Remember, your parents would be financially responsible for any damages incurred. (Let's not put them in that kind of a position.) No Trespassing: No doubt, sometime during the summer you will encounter a sign indicating no trespassing. Again, use your heads. The sign was put there for a purpose. It is a shame, that sometimes signs are used to protect a hazard, when proper fencing would be so very much better. bet-ter. . Have a fun summer, but a safe one. . Sgt. Michael Crowley P.S.
