The Park City Police Department investigated four automobile-pedestrian . accidents in the years 1974-1975, It should be noted that three out of the above mentioned four accidents occurred along Park Avenue and that each happened durinAithe night-time hours. Another very import im-port i fact is that in all occurances both the vehicle and the pedestrian were north-bound. The tuly startling ; fact is that each was a potential traffic fatality. . . We would like to make our citizens aware of several things that might assist in eliminating these needless accidents. We realize that, as of present, there have been no such accidents this year, but the potential still exists. Utah State Motor Vehicle Law 41-6-82(b) specifically states that where sidewalks are not provided (Park Avenue east-side) any pedestrians walking along and upon a highway shall when practible walk only on the left side of , the roadway or it's shoulder facing traffic, which may approach from the opposite direction. In other words, when it is necessary to walk along a ,' roadway, (existing sidewalk covered with snow or some how blocked) please walk facing the flow of traffic. Compliance to the above men- ; tioned rule, in itself, would nearly eliminate Park Avenues' automobile-pedestrian accident 4 potential. The pedestrian would always be able to see a potential hazard and react to it. i We would strongly recommend that all pedestrian traffic, during the night-time hours j wear white, or some other type of reflective I clothing. It should be noted that most of today's j ski apparel is of a reflective type. During i daylight hours, brightly colored clothing is recommended. We would also like to point out, j , (that in addition to reflective clothing, pedestrians are recommended to walk single-file i and as far out of the travel-portion of the road- way as possible. This act, in itself, ' has greatly lessened our accident potential along ! Park Avenue. . . Please, watch out for our. school children during the early morning and early evening hours .a Thaitk you for your cooperation.
