If the prospect of an intellectual soap opera sounds frightening or at least boring, perhaps you should tune in just to see if the combination of these seemingly incompatable elements (intellectual-Soap Opera?) is possible. Upstairs, Downstairs does combine many elements into a T.V. program that is, first of all, enjoyable. Make no mistake about it, Upstairs, Downstairs Down-stairs is a soap opera. There are subplots running run-ning simultaneously through the program, with the different characters' interactions providing the continuity. It's form is similar to As The World Turns, but different plot devices are used. Instead of dialogue written mainly to repeat all of the important shocking events of the last three weeks Upstairs, Downstairs uses a narrator, Afistar Cooke, to give a slight review and set the scene, freeing the dialogue for more important (and natural) conversations. Instead of sleazy wham-bang-thank-you-mam productions that are the American soap operas, Upstairs, . Downstairs is a well-produced television production with great care given to the lighting, acting and directing. And Upstairs, Downstairs doesn't have those insane soap commercials. com-mercials. Strangest of all, at the end of the program, you fmd yourself watching Alistar Cooke giving a mini history lesson. And you are watching with an intensity that you never gave History 101. Cooke weaves history and the characters together and slowly the changes that are taking place in the characters become clear. The most profound changes in history are not the shifts in political boundaries, but the shifts in people's attitudes. In Upstairs, Downstairs you follow a typical British upper class household and their servants through the changes that destroyed the rigid British class structure, while being entertained. What a novel idea ! . Actually, the premise behind the program is not unique. It has long been a proven fact that television can educate and entertain simultaneously, but that doesn't sell soap. That's why you have to watch Upstairs, Downstairs on , KUED (Channel 7) at 9:00 on Sundays, or not at j all.
