Park City's fortuitious, if nut overly abundant, snowfalls coupled with a dearth of the white stuff at the California resorts has made this ski season a banner one locally. -' Way Up PCSC Treasurer Merle Huseth reports that the dollar volume of lift ticket sales through February has increased in-creased 44 percent when compared to the same period last year. ' The dollar volume for the ski school is up 38 percent. Factors Huseth ticked off several factors which have contributed con-tributed to the increased revenues'. He noted that last season the Resort lacked sufficient snpw for the traditional Thanksgiving opener and that skiing did not commence until mid December. ' ; A hike in the price of lift tickets has also contributed to the jump in cash flow. Even discounting these elements, the dollar volume "would still be up significantly," Huseth . said. The difference, of course, is attributable ' to a marked increase in the number of skiers visiting Park City. And being "up significantly" here has a ' great deal to do with what is down significantly there the "there" being California and the "what" being snowfall. .: Forced to seek alternate locations in which to practice their downhill skills, California skiers have arrived in Park City, in unprecedented un-precedented numbers. Long Range Huseth predicts the jump in California-based business will result in a "long range effect for us." . He notes that many Californians have visited Park Cjty this year for the first time. "They have reacted favorably. They like the lack of lift lines, the variety of terrain and the quaintness of the town," Huseth said. This, he observed, translates into ' repeat business. Steady ' One of the more pleasing aspects of this season's boom is the consistency of the upward trend. Huseth remarked that the Resort has not experienced the pronounced peaks and valleys that have separated the holiday and non-holiday periods in past seasons. "Business has ' been steady," Huseth said. He then added that condominium reservations indicate the high tide will not recede until mid April. The corporation treasurer also reaffirmed the Resort's announced closing date of May 9 this season. . When Needed It is ironic that California skiers are foresaking their local resorts for a Park City that is experiencing a subpar snow year. The key, however, continuedonpage2) Storm Stops SEiiDinig The storm that hit the Wasatch Front early Monday brought excessive high winds that - forced the Park City Resort to close down its lift operations at approximately 11 a.m. -. f-vj-,,;.'' Victor Buck, : Lift Maintenance Main-tenance Superintendent, said, "At around 10:30 high winds started to cause a number of chairs on the Payday, Thaynes and Crescent lifts to derail which forced us to shut down operation." It took us until 2 p.m. before we had everybody off the lifts. "Buck estimated that some skiers had to spend as much as two hours in either the chairs or the gondola waiting for the winds to die down sufficiently for operation to continue. Although it was reported " that a person or persons had jumped from the stalled gondola, Phil Jones, Park City Ski Corp. Mountain Manager, told the Newspaper no injuries had resulted from the halting of lift operations. mm, Cold and urattttod with ptrlods of snow. High trnnpotturet botwitn 25 and 35. Lows In tho toons.
