Ask About Coor Printing AND THE PRINT SHOP Who is Stanley Kubrick? A. A hard working genius B. A world class director C. A compulsive, loony cynic D. All of the above The answer is obvious, especially after one sees Kubrick's latest extravaganza, Barry Lyndon. The film,' Barry Lyndon is difficult to sterotype. It appears to be a costume drama, but that phrase conjurs up a hackneyed melodrama, which it is not. Could the film be a romantic adventure story? Perhaps, although there is too much satire and cynicism to make the film truly romantic, and not enough a'dventure to put the film into that category'. Perhaps its a Stanley Kubrick film. Exactly, but that leads us back to our first question. V For those of you who have not done your homework, Stankey Kubrick is a famous film director whose previous works include Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001; A Space Oddessy, and A Clockwork Orange. The release of a Kubrick film (which averages one every three years) is considered a film event throughout the world. If there is a theme throughout his films, it would be the weakness and folly of humanity. Therefore, it makes sense that Kubricks latest film should be about the rise and fall of a foolish, naive Irishman. Barry Lyndon is an ambitious man without a conscience. His heroics are offset by cowardice. He would marry for money just as soon, as he would cheat at cards or desert the Army. His motives are transparent to everyone but himself. He is a wastrel and a fraud. Ironically, his only truly unselfish act of the film leads to his ultimate downfall. Kubrick cast Ryan O'Neal as Barry Lyndon, and extracted O'Neal's finest prformance on screen to date. Set in a period where matters of honor were settled by pistols at dawn, O'Neal had a chance to break his image as a cute but superficial actor. Although his role as Barry Lyndon is that of a shallow man, O'Neal's performance per-formance must show him first as a believable man, a simple man whose ambition is his main motivation, and ; secondly as a man . whose motives are easily descernable by the world. The task is not as easy as one might believe. Yet, there is no way that O'Neal could dominate Barry Lyndon. Stanley Kubrick directed the film. The actors, actresses, extras, cameras, scenery, lights, and costumes are merely the means by which Kubrick communicates com-municates his vision of Barry Lyndon. Few directors could match the visual banquet that is Barry Lyndon. Few directors can tell a story with such grace. Few directors have such a subtle sense of humor, or such a ''cool" visual style (in the McLuhenistic sense of the word). D? rry Lyndon shows that a Kubrick film is a film worth waiting three years for. Stanley Kubrick is a hard working genius'. A world class director, and a compulsive.loony cynic. Barry Lyndon shows it all. Kubrick is one of the rare directors that can tell a story with pictures (worth a thousand words). Sit back, relax, and watch Barry Lyndon. The answer is D.
