Show Pago 2 10 s Wednesday, February 11,1976 NecospapeR Talk Should We Puiliin Reverse? Very serious consideration is being given to the discontinuation of Park City's no-fare transportation system, This would be a mistake, both in principle and practicality. The nuts and bolts reason behind the move for abandonment by some city officials is the failure of some local merchants to pay their transportation tran-sportation assessments. There is, consequently, a fear that the city will be left holding the bag and the bills. The city got the buses rolling at the behest of 'the majority (both in numbers and dollar volume) of Park City business persons. Back in November, almost everyone concurred that a no-fare no-fare system would be of great benefit to the community as a needed service and revenue generator. . ' '" .. ' Enthusiasm for the system has apparently dissipated. The merchants who asked for it aren't paying for it. But the merchants aren't getting what they asked for, it is argued. This is true. U ; The performance of Lewis Bros. Stages has been sad. They signed a contract to provide specified amounts of service at specified times but have, on numerous occasions, failed to live up to their agreement. Lewis Bros, continues to cite equipment problems as justification for their substandard operation. But transportation is their business and a company that has been around as long as they have should certainly be able to foresee the problems involved and have facilities necessary to cope with these problems. Indeed, when bidding for the transportation contract, they assured the city that their experience ex-perience and vehicle inventory made them fully capable of meeting the challenges. To date, this capability has not been demonstrated. - But this is not sufficient reason to throw up our ( hands in dismay aand pout. Even with the service ser-vice falling short of expectations, the overall, visitor reaction has been decidedly positive. Less than perfect transportation is better than no transportation and it provides a springboard for better things in the future. When The Newspaper first endorsed the no-fare no-fare concept, we predicted problems would arise but said they could be overcome and that the system would prove to be a sound investment., Admittedly, we underestimated the difficulties we had faith in the promises of Lewis Bros. but we still contend the system will be a tremendous asset if allowed to live. : ' The transportation committee is currently working to upgrade the quality of service in regards to dependability and scope. If this upgrading occurs, and we are optimistic, there is no cause to run scared. A large portion of those who have yet to pay their transportation assessment are signers of the petition requesting the no-fare system. There are members of the city council who feel that if these who originally asked for no-fare are now Letter To The Community From Chamber And Ski Team How About ft ? Do you think Patty Hearst is guilty and, if so, do you think she will go to jail? Dean Brown Cliff Bergman through non-payment asking that it be terminated, ter-minated, the call should be heeded. Afterall, they say, if the people who started it don't want it, why continue? Why not give the red light now before we incur any additional expense? '', . Superficially, this appears to be sound logic but it crumbles under scrutiny. i If the city were to acquiesce to those refusing payment, every merchant who has complied with the adopted city ordinance could rightfully demand a refund of their assessment. In turn, the city would have no alternative but to dip into municipal funds to pay for the service provided' up to the time of termination. This would present a situation wherein the business community requested a service for which they promised to pay and then backed out at the time of reckoning, leaving the taxpayers to foot the bill. Should the entire town be made to pay for a system conceived and created by the business community? Also, it has been the intent from day one to seek federal money for funding of the system in . the future. The bureaucratic wheels have already begun turning in this direction but it would be a difficult task to sell something that no longer exists. We may all get a free ride next year if we hold on this year. V Even aside from the "you asked for it you pay for it" considerations, the overall ramifications of no-fare's death are extremely significant. As stated earlier, the system, with all its shortcomings, has been well-received. There are, no doubt, visitors who will return to Park City next winter expecting the service they appreciated so much this winter. . Also, in the weeks to come, there will be maqv, other visitors arriving who have been told of no-fare system. What do we tell them whertttey get here and have no means of transportation? The demise of no-fare would diminish not only the amenities offered by Park City but its character as well. The benefits of no-fare surely have been discernable this season but the real harvest will be reaped in the years ahead. Park City, due to: fortuitous circumstances, is experiencing a very successful winter. Record numbers of vacationers are being exposed to our city and are then exiting to spread the good word. The no-fare system is a means of accelerating this momentum by providing just one more reason to make a return visit. We are not so well endowed that we can afford to casually discard a strong selling point. . A public hearing which may determine the fate of the no-fare system will be held this Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Building. We urge all of you who can perceive the potential the transportation system holds for the betterment I , of Park City to attend and lend your support. AmyHambh ' Dean Brown I think that's hard to tell, she has an excellent lawyer. It all depends on how the jury interprets the films they have of her during the bank robbery. I think she will go to jail in the end, . Vance McDonald - I think she is guilty but won't go to jail. She will get out of it due to the fact that her father has such influencing spheres he can work with. I think it's a shame because she did commit a crime and she should go to jail. Cliff Bergman I don't think she was guilty in the beginning but after a while she kind of got , into what was happening. There is no way she'll go to jail. ' Peggie Dweyer She is guilty as hell. I was watching the newsreel they had on T.V. last night that showed her in the bank and it was so obvious . I think she'll go to jail because there are so many people who believe she is guilty and if she didn't they will protest. Amy Hamlan There has been so much publicity I think it will be hard for her to get a really objective trial. It is hard to tell exactly what kind of psychological distress she went under that consequently caused her to act the way she did. It seems to me though, the. key question is whether she acted with freedom of choice. Unless F. Lee Bailey come up with a motion picture ending, it's all over but the crying for Miss Tania. The telegram was delivered to the Team at the opening of the Olympics, 17 pages long and bearing the signatures of 963 people from this area. Such support and recognition from the Ski Team headquarters community com-munity mean a lot to those racers who work 11 months of the year to represent this country in all international competitions. It certainly would not have been possible without the enthusiastic help of the many who joined in the effort. To the Jr. Racing Team, a special thank you for their help. We are happy to share a part of the telegram proceeds with them in the hopes that someday soon a racer from Park City might be on the national team and among those representing us in the Olympics.
