Show Wednesday, February 4, 1 976 Page 8 kimny Ski School Red Banjo Remains Undefeated; Edges Claimjumper WELOOM the by Bob Kassow Friday, Dec. 26th, was warm and sunny. That night the temperature fell and water vapor moving from the warmer snow hit the cold air anc created a crystal layer on The Snow called "Surface hoar." f Early Saturday morning, Dec. 27th, the wind started Diowing witn gusts up to ou mpn. rne wind blew all day Saturday, depositing as much as 3 feet of snow on east and northeast facing slopes. The avalanche control team found very high avalanche hazard in the area, with only the weight on a skier being enough to release slides on eash and northeast facing slopes. More evidence of unstable snow conditions was found on Sunday, the 28th in the back country around the Resort, with many natural avalanche releases in the back bowls. On Monday, the 29th, two ski tourers from Park City were in the shadow lake area; They climbed up to Scott's Pass and then headed for White Pine Canyon by Traversing across the open bowls to the north of the pass. When they were within 100 yards of the top of the Ridge, between Thaynes and White Pine Canyons, they started to traverse back and forth at a sharp angle. Just as they reached the top of the ridge, they released an avalanche which carriried them approximately 200 yards down the slope and buried tnem unaer 4 teet oi sncw at 3:20 p.m. A hasty search party was dispatched dispat-ched at 3:30 consisting of five patrolmen. They arrived at the scene at 4 : 45 and began a search of , discovered face down under 4 xk inches of snow, there was an ice mask around his face. All efforts ef-forts to revive him with cardo-pulmonary resucitation failed. The other victim was found at 5:30 under 3 feet of snow face up, he had a small air pocket around his head and there was evidence that he had struggled to free himself. All efforts to revive him failed also. The Datrolmen on the search brought the bodies out the bottom of Thaynes Canyon at 6:30 p.m.', This incident is a true story except that the two skiers did not get covered up in the slide and this fictional rescue was not necessary. The tourers proceeded on their way to White Pine Canyon, hopefully wiser for the experience. Since it had not snowed in two weeks, these skiers assumed that there was no avalanche danger. They had not taken into consideration the wind deposited show on top of a "lubricating layer" of surface hoar which produced an extreme ex-treme condition of slab instability. Back country snow condition information is available by calling 649-9811 ext. 3844 or ext. 3977 or please check in with the Ski Patrol when taking any tour in the resort area. We would like to remind ski tourers in the area that they are not on public land. We also encourage ski tourers to learn all they can about avalanches and avalanche conditions, before they go touring and hopefully avoid a tragedy due to ignorance. By taking advantage of the expertise available at the Resort Ski Touring School. The accident that almost happened in the preceding story was fortunately hypothetical, but only because the skiers were very lucky. With the growth of cross-country skiing, more and more people are taking to the back country without sound knowledge of avalanche or ski touring safety; basic principles which must be recognized for safe winter travel in the back country. In an effort to educate the ski touring public and hopefully prevent tragedies in the back country, the Stein Eriksen Ski Touring School in cooperation with the Park uty Professional ski Patrol is offering an Avalanche Ski Touring Safety Clinic on February 13, 14, and 15; An evening lecture lonowea Dy a aay, a nignt ana a; , rtrr i n rna no n rnupnnu mn nnrain rpsriin techniques, emergency shelter construction, map and compass tecnniques, route seiecuun, and avalanche recognition and rescuej-For more information contact the ski school 649-8111 ext. 3857 or call Bob Kassow 654-3300. 0 c III 1 it s S 3 d YfoQ Wlrrtor.
