Bergman normally produces one film a year. But what is less known about him is that he usually writes and produces a play when he is in his "off season", for filmmaking. Hence, it is not surprising that when Bergman chose to produce Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, he would try to wed the theatrics of opera and the art of filmmaking.',. film-making.',. 'l ' : . Bergman has made a film that should prove to be an interesting introduction to opera for those who have sworn that they would never enjoy it. Mozart's The Magic Flute is an allegory that, very briefly put, says that if one is courageous in the pursuit of truth and wisdom, one will be rewarded by bliss. As in all operas, the story is secondary to the music, and continuity of the plot sometimes is a bit weak. Mozart's music is superb (of course), and should be one of the main reasons for seeing the film. However, Bergman's treatment of the opera is what is most interesting about this film. There is no attempt to hide the fact that this is an opera, and opera is a stage production. Even during the overture, when most directors would have concentrated on the orchestra, Bergman is filming the faces of the audience, since the audience's reaction to the production often influences in-fluences the performers. I'vv!;.;5:. Throughout the film Bergman mixes film technique with common theater practices. Lightning flashes are obviously produced by spotlights. Scene changes are performed, while the camera is running. Bergman even takes the audience backstage to see the actors relaxing during intermission. But all this is mixed with solid film technique. . The close up, which is Bergman's forte, is used in abundance. The camera is often placed on the stage, and camera angles reflect Berman's cinematic style. What has happened to the Ingmar Bergman who just a year ago had produced an emotionally explosive Scenes From a Marriage? What has happened to the man whose name is synonymous with psycho-phylosophical dramas? He's taking a brief vacation perhaps, or, more likely, he's just showing the world another facet, of his brilliant personality. , , f 5 With The Magic Flute, Bergman is also going to make some of those people who swore that they'd never enjoy opera sing a different tune.
