Show l f HE UnW of Utah TT IT" : f - ' VOLUME 12. NUMBER i i ,t,'rrnr Was celebrated in a quiet, yet heart felt way, lust Friday. At 10 a. ua, a large audience was seated in the Meeting House ready for the short, but impressive impres-sive program that followed. Mayor Keynolds"called order, " as Master of Ceremonies, "and the L. D. S. and Presbyterian choirs sang the opening song, following which, was the invocation invo-cation by the chaplaiu, Myron Craudall. Miss Rosa Peterson, in a very pleasing style, delivered an extract ex-tract from President Lincoln's speech at the unvailiug of the Gettysburg monument. The Presbyterian choir sang, 4 Scatter the flowers of May." Miss Lillian Plymptou then introduced eight little girls, in white array, with Hags ami (low ers, sang an appropriate selection, selec-tion, a pretty, pleasing feature. Ether Blanchard gave an original sentiment in rhyme. A double quartett came next, executed by Messrs II. G Brown, Mnse Gudmundsen, John New-t New-t m, W. K." Johnson jr., M. F. Miner, Jessie Strang, Myron Crandall and Frank West. I). C. Johnson, in a twenty ' minules speech, refered to the LU T-?i of tldav. o I J tie . Hall in a brief, but spirited address, commented upon up-on Abraham Liucoln's farewell words at Springfield, 111 , when he left h nue. to assume the duties t-f president. Singing by the choirs, and a benediction by Bp. Anderson concluded the exercises. It is a noteworthy fact that (he new quarters for the choir, and speakers platform are decided de-cided improvements, for such exercises. After the conclusion at the -Meeting House the Maccabee band marched to the City cemetery, cem-etery, playing some lovely aiis by the way and while there. In the afternoon many of the people wiled the pleasaut hours away visiting, and enjoying the music. The school houses were conspicuous con-spicuous by the absence of the flag from their staffs. the only services, the others being at Provo. From one of the most disease-stricken disease-stricken purls in the world, Havana Ha-vana has been converted into a charming tropical city a result re-sult which has been due entirely entire-ly to American enterprise in Cuba. What a wonderful sanitary sani-tary change has been wrought in the old town is graphically told by Major W. M. Black, in the "National Geographical Magazine.. Shanties and sheds that had been for decades breeding places for cholera germs were ruthlessly ruthless-ly swept away; streets never repaired in the memory of living liv-ing man were cleaned or repav-ed, repav-ed, sewera were rebuilt; and houses were unceremoniously entered and disinfected. All this work has been done, not spasmodically but systematic-ally. systematic-ally. Cleaning squads were sent from house to house; apartments ap-artments were cleaned regard: less of the protests of their inmates. in-mates. The accumulation of years from cellars were thrown out. Such an arbitrary procedure proced-ure would,' no doubt, raise a storm of indignant protest from the people "of North America. But the he.dih and safety of Havana demanded it:?'--- , - The most admirable work . of ihoi since me uhy wwn - ' XT .1.1- t they werejirst built have they been looked after. Msny. of them wtp ehked by the refuse of derades. T!e Atneric m authorities au-thorities not only '.managed to repair the sewer system and rentier it in every way serviceable service-able but did so without injuring the 1 1 fe of a single laborer. The streets of the city have boen cleaned, ami in many cases transformed. Narrow thorough-fares thorough-fares have been widened. A magnificent sea wall and promenade pro-menade have been built; parks have been cleared and converted convert-ed from haunts of thieves into pleasure grounds for the people. The worst pest hole in Hava na was the Hospital Militar. To be carried to that place was like oeing carried to one s grave. Not more than 30 per cnt of the patients who entered its walls ever came out alive. American Am-erican surgeons avoided it; soldiers sold-iers held their breath when they passed it. The sanjtary squad of the Engineer Corps took pos- session of the building, cleaned it from attic to cellar, coaled its walls again uud again with whitewash, and finally left the building clean and wholesome. It is now used for a school house. Naturally the slothful Cubans JTfeTon prosesslo wTTico ineyn were subjected. What was good enough for their grmidtatliers was good enough lor them, they thought. Probably most of the Cubans, if the matter of clean-ing clean-ing the city had been put to pop ular vote, would have decided against the transformation oi the town. Now that the street? are cleaned, the parks trimmed and lighted and the sea prome nades enjoyable, they have revised re-vised their opinions of American extravagauce and have even be gun to take a certain pride in the new capital. What the ef fect of tne sanitary improvement improve-ment of the , city has been' is easily proven by a comparison of the vital statistics in past years In, 1896 no less than 1,262 deaths from yellow fever alone were reported to the cuy gov- prnmfint. The averace for the eleven proceeding American cc cujation was 440 fatal cases. Last year, for Ihe first time in ilie history of the city, the yellow yel-low fever season passed withoui five fatal cases of the disease Ocfober, November and December, Decem-ber, the three months in the year daring which the fever was he worst under Spanish rule, passed without a single case.
