Johnson taking control on Feb. 1st, and we will therefore say farewell to the business world of Springville. We are sorry to say that the prospects for the future in this city are not encouraging, the community as a whole being too firmly in the grasp of the unprogressive element. There is a small and determined body of citizens who wish to make something of the town and who will ultimately succeed, but it will take a long and hard fight to do it. We would welcome that sort of a contest, but it is not one for a poor man, so we are constrained to leave it for others. Our successor, Hon. D. C. Johnson, is known to all our friends, and we commend him to their tender mercies. Be good to him and he will be good to you. Than King you all for the many favors of the past years, we will suy "Farewell," with the best wishes for your prosperity and happiness. Wm. F Gibson. Governer Shaw's alleged possession pos-session of twelve toes isn't won derful. Nearly every politician has at least two faces. It is difficult, if not absolute ly impossible, to appreciate the full value of any thing you have. It's dead easy when you haven't got it. Gen. Nelson A. Miles isn't a politician, but he has the politi cians knack of cultivating the good will of newspaper men lown to a fine point. Let us give Prince Hi'nry everything to which courtesy and hospitality entitle him, but don't let us send him home disgusted dis-gusted with our toadyism. Vaccinating the members of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce was all right, but smallpox isn't the only thing that such organizations ought to be vaccinated for. Some cynical paragrapher will be certain to refer to Carrie Nation's having cut off her big toe with her little hatchet as "a case of retributive justice,"when it wus in reality a Nation's loss. If the practice of jailing clair voyants who p-ey upon the cred ulous and superstitious becomes general, how will a lot of "suek-ers" "suek-ers" get rid of their spare change? There have already been re corded a number of remarkable cures of cancer byX-Ilaya audit is believed that in time the rays will prove an infallible cure when the cases are taken in time. An experiment made during the recent Swiss military movements move-ments developed the -fact that troops that were permitted to smoke on the line of march were less sensible to fatigue, and fresher at the finish than those to whom tobacco had been de nied. This does uot sho-v bow-ever, bow-ever, that those who used tobacco tobac-co had an advantage over those who never smoked, and those, therefore, did not leel any deprivation. Marie Corelli is raving again. She is paving the way for a new book or trying to increase the sale of the old ones. She is an advertising expert, all right, whatever her status as an au. thor may be. There is au island in the Sacramento Sac-ramento river which produces most of the asparagus which is consumed in the United States out of season. The island produces pro-duces more wealth than any gold mine in California. Montana diamonds are the latest thing in the get-rich-quick discoveries. The discoveries are alleged to have been made on Blood Creek, and the stampede stam-pede to that section bids fair to result in making the section justify its npme. During the last fiscal year the Navy Department purchased 321,108 tons of coal for the use of naval vessels, at a cost of $2,273,111.81. Considering the number of coal fields in this country it would seem that it would pay the government to own its own mines. Another college professor has been inviting trouble. Prof. C. W. Pearson, now of the Northwestern North-western University, which is controlled by the Methodists, but is likely to be an iconociast-out-of-a-job soon, says the Bible stores of Christ's miracles are untrue and harmful. The proceedings of a, case heard by the Governer of New Hven Colony, May Day, 1620, have been recently brought Wrr-pHe "DeWitt's Witch Hazel light. One Jacob Murline and S-iruh Tuttle had been caught kissing, and after a severe lecture the Governor fined them each twenty shillings. Spanish Fork ha3 another newspaper. The plucky publisher pub-lisher is Andrew Jensen, who recently bought out the job office there. If Mr. Jensen is wise and careful he will be successful. Spanish Fork people have been buncoed so often by unscrupulous newspaper news-paper men that a square deal long continued is the only thing which will appeal to them. This Mr. Jensen will give them, and if the people will meet him halfway Spanish Fork will soon have a permanent place on the newspaper map of Utah. Don't Live Together. Constipation and health never go together. DeWitt's Little Early Risers promote tasy action of the bowels without distress. "I have been troubled with costlveness nine years," says J. O. Greene, Depauw, Ind. "I have tried many remedies but Little Early Risers give best results." re-sults." People's Drug Store. Oldest Clt' Now Itailro'tJ. Damascus, the oldest city In the world, will boo have in Its streets the tracks of a ratlroad, on whlcft the most modern methods will prevail. For more than4,000 years the city got along without means of transportation, although al-though It was enterprising enough to find a place In the Bible and the world's history. Wheat has wrought a change In Damascus now. Its annual output of the cereal is 10,000,000 bushels. bush-els. A boom town in the West was never more lively than this relic of the dead past. CamoU Do Not Mind th Wea her. The uatlve camels of Siberia are a source of constant wonder to travelers. travel-ers. On the Mongolian plateau, for in-ttance, in-ttance, the thermometer often registers a temperature of 40 degrees below zero, but the camels do not mind it at all, walking about as blithely as if the weather were as balmy us spring. On the other hand, the temperature on the Gobi desert in summer Is sometimes some-times 140 degrees above zero, and the beasts mind Unit heat Just as little as they do lb estrone cold. wInfl"ored the torture of the damned with protruding piiea brought on by constipation constipa-tion with which I was aflticted for twenty years, i ran across your UAM'AKt Ti in trie town of Newell. Some Idea of Earl Cadogaa's wealth may be gathered from the fact that some thirteen or fourteen yeanf ago he expended a quarter million pounds on the purchase of the Culford estate, In Suffolk, and the rebuilding of the house. Shortly after this he presented an extensive site in Chelsea, known as Blocklands, to the Guinness trust, for the erection of workmen's dwellings. dwel-lings. It Is probable that during the next few years his wealth will be doubled. A Cure for Lumbago. VV. C. Williamson, of Amherst, Va., says: ''For more than a year I! suffered fro-u lumbago. The tax upon motor carriages in 1900 was paid by 2,897 persons. Children Especially Liable. limns, bruises and culs are extremely painful and if neglected of I en result in blood poisoning. A great number of persons of varied talents preached to them with a view to obtaining the post. All went well until he gave out tho text: "See that ye refuse net him that spcaketh." Imagine the consternation con-sternation the people experienced when he read out the text in a lofty and commanding manner. He was unapre of the feeling he created. The people did the opposite from the text The young man was not called. Cures the Grip in Tuuo Days No remedy equals Warner's White Wine of Tar Syrup for this terrible and fatal disease. If taken thoroughly and in time, it will cure a case in two days, and for the cough that follows La Grippe it never fails to give relief. Price 25 and 50 cents. Edison' Advice. "Don't wi" h the cl k," was Mr. Edison's advice to a young man who recently asked him how to succeed. Profoundly significant is that old Joke about the laborer who left his pickax hanging in the air at the stroke of noon. A hanging pickax la the fittest emblem for a confirmed clock-watcher and the pickax hangs always In the air, never dlg3 out a patch for him to advance upon. Lifting Man with Finger. Here is a little experiment as instructive in-structive as it is astonishing; lifting a man with the fingers alone. Two persons place the index finger of both hands under the soles of the feet of the man to be operated upon. tTwo more place their outstretched finger as shown in the illustration under the elbows, and one of these places his finger under the man's chin. At a signal sig-nal they all lift, and to everybody'' astonishment the person will be easily raised above the ground. to write for our confidential letter before p- pIvtriR for patent; tt may oe worm money.
