Ne'.vs Matters of Interest in that Hustling Burg- Mafi-KTOX, Feb. 21. A feeling of gloom was cast over our little settlement settle-ment to-day at the news of the death of Mrs. Harriett L. Curtis, wife of Il'-nry Curtis, at about 3 o'clock this morning. Deceased has been sick with dropsy for about seven weeks. Last Friday Drs. Dunn and Petersuu performed an (rperatiou which rc-lieved rc-lieved her somewhat, but could not hinder the fatal outcome of the disease. Mrs. Curtis was the daughter of Edwin and Mary Whiting, and w;is born April 7, 13o0, in Manti, being one of the first native-born children in Sanpete. In 1861 she came with her parents to SpringviUe, where at the age of 17 she married Henry Curtis. Eleven children have been born to them, all now living but two boys. Her eldest daughter, Mrs' Ilaitie Evans, is spending the winter in Iowa; the others being with her during her sickness. Au aged mother also survives her. In her youth Mrs. Curtis was a school teacher, and after her marriage she kept a small store at this place for a number of years. She was postmaster post-master nine years, acted as school trustee one term, and was president of the Y. L. M. I. A. four years. All these positions she filled with honor. Many relatives and friends mourn her loss. (Cors.vpon d-evee d-evee Herald) Of late the people of SpringviUe have been having Mor mon ism preached t them in a way different from the usual custom. Ernest M. Boyer and Thomas Loynd (returned elders) commenced a series of meetings Sunday evening, Feb. 12, which will conclude Sunday evening, Feb. 19. The novel feature of the meetings h;;s been that the elders proceeded just as they do. in the world, by treating the people as though they had no knowledge of Mormonism whatever. The elders have done their own singing, praying and preaching. Fundamental doctrines doc-trines and ordinances believed in by the Mormons have been discoursed upon. The house has been crowded every evening, which goes far to prove that the meetings have been very interesting. in-teresting. 11. Leo Bird, a student of the B. A number of contradictory reports have been heard recently in regard to the Rio Grande Western's Ultimate intentions with respect to Provo canyon. It has been asserted so often since the companys' purchase of the Park City line that the work in Provo canyon was but a bluff, that people were coming' to believe it.
