Show 18 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, June 12, 2008 Snippetts Helen Beardall Many of you readers will remember the olden days when the outhouses were the rule of the day. Chambers Cham-bers kept under the bed or in a closet overnight, needing need-ing to be emptied the next day. These items were a great necessity and a wonderful won-derful invention. But even greater was the new addition addi-tion to a corner of the house; with eventual installation of something some referred to as the Great White Throne. A story from an article in Southern Utah Stated their new addition (a toilet) was made of copper, the children were enterprising and decided to charge a nickel or less for people to come and look at the new facility, the very first one in the community. It did raise quite the onlookers; people came from miles around to view the contraption. At my house in Salt Lake, we had a bathroom, but when we went to visit Grandma and Grandpa on the ranch in Idaho, it was only the outhouse. The kitchen sink was made of metal and you had to pump the water out into a pan or k pitcher. Well, Springville was no different, but with change to a new sanitary system, another system had to take place, that of the disposal of f X jr i desp7LIMITED TIME OFFER a m aslowas 6Hl Certificate to Interior Elements , : I : with full house order I j J ' - . i i 1 One Year No Interest Utah toll free 888-201-7135 Showroom 505 N 1200 West, Orem f i f Is M '"' I '.' Roosevelt, Roos-evelt, who created the WPA because of the depression (1929 forward) and many people being out of work, decreed that the outhouses needed to be upgraded to a better quality and disposal system and to cut back on the dispersion of disease-bearing disease-bearing body wastes. New holes were dug and lined with cement and new outhouses out-houses were placed over cement cavities or chambers cham-bers containing the influx, thus preventing the material mate-rial from contaminating the ground about the homes and farms. By doing this, many men were able to find work installing such items. The next item to upgrade was called the septic tank, and the overflow of water from these tanks was funneled into a ditch in front or back of a home, and in Springville, Spring-ville, water eventually found its way into streams about town, leading to the dumping in Hobble Creek. Disease was always abundant, abun-dant, such as typhoid fever, and it was thought that the source of such a disease was found in the water or drainage ditches. In 1934, the city fathers drafted a plan along with engineers to build a new system sys-tem of collecting the waste from the homes and fun- $2900 00 10 Windows Installed Low E, Vinyl Frames, up to 15 sq. ft each Upgrade Options: Swing in for Easy Cleaning Hidden Screens, More Light Secure Multi-point Locks Easy to Operate Energy Efficient, Save $'s 656 ll. 800 794-9444 1 Large Super Premium Pizza i 4 fftg1 2 Liter Soda, Wacky Stickj . 5 PcsBBQ or HptWings 1 Large Super Premium Pizza 1 2 Liter Soda Cheese Sticks' 10 Pes BBQ or Hot Wings free! In 1935, construction con-struction began on the new drain system, roads were dug up, laterals were dug to homes, facilitating the removal re-moval of waste into a main channel. So many of . the trenches were dug by hand, throwing one shovelful at a time up to a certain level, another person throwing the dirt up to the next level, and finally being thrown up onto the top of the area being excavated. Small pipe was laid in the laterals (homes) and fastened into a bigger pipe, with the graduation gradu-ation of pipe being larger to handle the city needs. These bigger pipes were laid under the side of the roads. This huge construction project came online in 1937, with all waste being funneled to Utah Lake. In 1955, a sewage plant was built out northwest of town and again all new lines had to be built directing direct-ing the waste to this new processing plant. Here the material was sterilized and the waste water directed to Utah Lake, making things safer. Much of the equipment installed at that time is still in use today, but it is now in great need of being updated with newer, safer equipment. equip-ment. The old sewer lines are too old to handle the influx in-flux of new homes and need to be upgraded. A town of 2,000 then, Springville is now approaching the 30,000 mark. It looks like this breakthrough in medical W1. ing of waste to the sewage treatment plant. Today the waste disposal plant is serving a two-fold purpose. Sewer sludge is sterilized and all the bacteria bac-teria destroyed. Then the sludge is then combined with ground-up tree limbs, yard waste such as spent flowers, lawn clippings, and garden waste that has been composted. The result is mixed together thoroughly thorough-ly and allowed to further compost, which is brought about by the heat generated from such a mixture. This kills all the seeds that might have been in the compost material. This completed composted material is then available to the public for a small fee to return to your flower and garden spots all clean and free from germs and weed seeds. When you take a shower, show-er, flush your toilets, cook and clean, think about the process above and how things have improved over the years, making life in Springville much easier and so much safer from that of yesteryear. Thanks again to the visions vi-sions of our past leaders, engineers and others who have made this possible. There is much material to be gleaned from the historical his-torical files of Springville housed at the Springville Historical Society, located at 200 South and Main Streets in Springville.
