NKarrie Beardall, chairman chair-man of the Springville Emergency Preparedness Committee, spent almost a week being Mike's assistant as-sistant at the FEMA Earthquake Training in Maryland when both were deployed by FEMA in 2006. After working with Stever, she invited him to . share his presentation on the Myths and Realities of Disaster in Utah. Stever stressed that Utah is not immune from any kind of disaster, and then went' on to explain that the process of dealing with disasters di-sasters is all the same, no matter what they are. He then turned his focus to earthquakes and gave a few sobering facts. Accord- , ing to Stever, 90 percent of Utah's population lives within 10 miles of an active ( fault line. Also, geologists give a one-in-four chance of, a major quake occurring occur-ring in the next 10 years in Utah. The areas identified as the most likely to move next were Brigham City and Salt Lake city . . Here are some symptoms and what to do if you suspect your cat is one of the many that suffers from this ailment. How to Tell if Your Cat Can't Hear Changes in your cat may be hard to notice, at first. They might sleep more soundly than usual, possibly possi-bly not even hearing the much loved sound of their morning meal being prepared. Other symptoms are more obvious. Being easily startled, meowing may increase in volume. Unusual odor, discharge from the ears, shaking of scratching at their ears. Just remember that symptoms vary from cat to cat and some of these symptoms make also indicate an ear infection. Reasons for Hearing Loss , .. Interestingly enough, cats with white fur or blue eyes are more prone to being born with hearing problems due to certain genetic predispositions. Hearing loss may also result if your cat has experienced experi-enced an infection or mass in its middle or inner ear and just as in humans, the aging process plays a big role in hearing loss. ' When and How to Seek Help If you are worried about your cat's hearing, talk to your veterinarian about how to best test, treat or deal with the problem. If your cat does have hearing problems you might want to consider keeping them indoors. There are many more outdoor concerns such as traffic that will be hard for them.
