The EFY Medley phenomenon Nobody knew that the combining of two separate hymns would create a phenomenon phe-nomenon throughout the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but ever since "As Sisters In Zion" and "We'll Bring the World His Truth" was first taught to a group of Especially For Youth participants early in summer of 1999, nearly one-third of a million mil-lion have performed "The Medley" at EFY camps all across the country, with tens of thousands more singing it in congregations around the world. At EFY, singing the medley quickly became a highlight for the youth. "When we sang "As Sisters Sis-ters In Zion" and "We'll Bring the World His Truth"on Thursday night, I was so overwhelmed with the Spirit. I realized how lucky I am to be a member of the church surrounded sur-rounded by others who know the truth and love the gospel as much as I do! It was amazing!" said Beth Deever, an EFY participant partici-pant from Maryland. The popularity of the medley has been a phenomenon phe-nomenon throughout the Church, yet its creation is Cmcer survivors invited to join in planting Garden of Hope It is hard to picture spring tulips blooming when the weather turns cool and fall is in full swing but that is exactly what Central Utah Cancer Center Cen-ter is asking their patients to do. Apparently Ap-parently teens are taking advantage of the summer sun and Vermont's lax public nudity laws to display dis-play their assets, r Not everyone is pleased. Some adults have complained com-plained vociferously. But according to town leaders, as long as the kids are not breaking any laws, municipal mu-nicipal authorities are evidently evi-dently powerless. Youthful nudity is nothing noth-ing new. Remember streaking? streak-ing? Who could forget that craze? Youthful nudity is also a perennial favorite on university campuses nationwide, generally late at night and encouraged by too much to drink. It happens. I'm not dismissing dis-missing it or endorsing it, just saying it's nothing new. just as miraculous. None of the EFY Coordinators Coor-dinators had extensive knowledge of music theory. theo-ry. Nor did they know that these two hymns' melodies melo-dies and chord structures fit perf edtly and could be sung simultaneously when they asked BYU student and composer Michael R. t Hicks to arrange them for r their summer program. "I have yet to find two more hymns that match in chord progression, mel- 5 ody, and theme like these I two hymns match" Hicks said. "The EFY Coordinators Coordina-tors were inspired and -led to these two hymns. I was merely the one who ( noticed how well the two hymns fit together musi cally." 5 He decided to add the first line of the Young Women's theme as a coun-termelody coun-termelody so the young women could sing it with melody. Since it's creation, The EFY Medley has been performed per-formed all over the world, including the United States, Lithuania, Australia, New ' Zealand, England, Canada, Cana-da, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Bo-livia, Czech Republic, Chile, Brazil, Portugal, China, "There's something inspiring in-spiring in spring tulips," said Annette Nielsen, Cancer Can-cer Center manager of patient care services. The thing that seems to be different about the Vermont phenomenon is . that these teenagers are in their hometown. Perhaps it's one thing to race naked across the campus com- ; mons at midnight when one's lifelong neighbors . can't see you, but this action ac-tion is in broad daylight not far from where these ' kids live. My question is where are their parents? Have we progressed so far as a culture that parents are no longer aware, no longer care, or no longer wield any influence? Or worse, , are parents supportive of their children's foray into public nudity? It's difficult to say, but it's interesting to note that none of the national news coverage this episode at- " traded has quoted a single . parent. The EFY Medley has even found popularity outside the Church. Tyler Hinton, an EFY Office Coordinator, was in Taiwan Tai-wan when he discovered the EFY medley phenom enon had reached a group of Taiwanese high school students. "They had been practicing it on their own and wanted its to help with the pronunciation. Even though I'm sure most of them didn't understand the words, and they weren't members of the Church (or even Christians), it was an incredible experience to hear 100 Taiwanese high school students singing it," Hinton said. . Both songs in The Medley Med-ley were originally written by Janice Kapp Perry, the composer of many popular Along with planting tulips on campus, participants partici-pants will be given a bulb to take home and plant in their own yard.
