Show 12 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, August 10, 2006 Lady Red After tryouts and two-a-day workouts in the heat and rain, the 2006 Lady Red Devils are prepared to again compete at the top levels of the region and state. The 2004 region championship was followed fol-lowed in 2005 by the ladies' deepest ever penetration into the state tournament under first- year coach, Ryan Swansoa While 2005 was a very exciting campaign, this year promises to be a barnburner. barn-burner. There is a growing grow-ing level of parity within the region and competition will be fierce. Lady Red Devil Soccer will be a high stakes, dynamic affair in 2006. 2005 Highlights The Springville side played some amazing matches last year. They started with a bang-bang goal by Rachel Fischer in the third minute of the first game against 5-A powerhouse power-house Timpanogos. Jessica Jes-sica Rogers fed the ball to Fischer on a speedy counter coun-ter attack. Fischer scampered scam-pered past the defense to drive the ball home before most of the fans knew the game was afoot. Timpanogos Timpano-gos eventually leveled the score on a questionable PK, but the Devils were clearly ready to play with the big schools. The Devils demonstrated their toughness by beating beat-ing 5-A Jordan in a rough and tumble match. Against the Beetdiggers, Crosby Joyner showed her creativity cre-ativity and finishing ability. abil-ity. With the score level at 1-1 and the clock ticking tick-ing down, Joyner took a ball from the midf ield. She and Brit Siddoway were 2 v 4 in the attacking third. Siddoway made a brilliant dummy, run that drew two defenders away and left Joyner 1 v 2. Joyner danced the ball around them and beat the keeper with a right-footed shot that clanked off the far post and into the side netting net-ting on the near side just before the final whistle. An unexpected opportunity opportu-nity to play Salt Lake's 5-A 5-A Hillcrest resulted in another an-other stunning win. After goals by Joyner, Siddoway and Karissa Henage the score was knotted at 3-3 and it looked as though a draw was certain. Coach Swanson shifted his formation forma-tion to a 44-2 to recapture cud mm s. $ Your Gc-ial Source! 7 08 3 KHTAUfiar H T A L AND MOftl 181 South 1200 East lehl m-f www Mountain West 410 So. 450 W., Springville 489-9676 Small dog & cat boarding Come and see us for your needs during your Summer Vacation if j 'O 'i 'tJ -J DevU Soccer: 2006 the midfield. The strategy worked and with three minutes remaining Joyner was given a ball at the 30. She hippity-hopped her way through two defenders, defend-ers, juked the keeper who went down in a heap, and slotted the ball home for the game winner. Against Orem, the Devils played into sudden-death overtime. Karissa Henage showed her deft touch by slicing a free kick over the wall and the outstretched hands of the keeper for a jaw-dropping golden goal. Against Timpview, Hai-ley Hai-ley Francis had a brace of long- range goals and barely missed a hat trick when her third drive hit the crossbar. The 2005 season was filled with thrilling wins and narrow losses. Springville Spring-ville had the best goal differential dif-ferential in 4-A at 2.06. They had 43 points overall (14-3-1) which was 8 points better than, Orem (11-5-2). Orem surprisingly upset Springville for the region title when the keeper, Hannah Han-nah Silvey, was hampered by an injury. That sets the stage for an intense battle in the 2006 season. Traditionally Tradi-tionally strong sides, Pro-vo Pro-vo and Timpview, as well as upstart Lehi, will all be looking for a region crown. Four 5-A opponents in the preseason should tune the Red Devils for region play. They should be up for the challenge. 2006 Squads Coach Swanson begins his second year with assistant as-sistant coaches Jay Francis Fran-cis and Kimber Killpack. Swanson lost six seniors from last year's varsity. Fortunately, the talent pool is deep in Springville. Sixty young women tried out this year with many having had excellent experience ex-perience under coaches Virginia Maybe and Craig LaMont. The following girls have been selected on the three squads. Varsity The varsity team will consist of Caitlin Duncan, Heather Hatfield, Karissa Henage, Crosby Joyner, Jessica Rogers, Anisa An-drus, An-drus, Jessica Bailey, Betsy Cannon, Rachel Fischer, Hailey Francis, Shelbi Hill, Karlie Jensen, Kaylynn Swanson, Chase Joyner, Natalie Young, Brianna Blackwell, Sadie Clemens and Kim Stratford. Coach Swanson has selected se-lected a mix of strength and speed. The spine of the formation will probably be filled by the seniors. It is anticipated that Swanson will anchor a 4-3-3 around Karissa Henage at center-mid. center-mid. Henage has outstanding outstand-ing overall field sense. Over the years, Henage has demonstrated excellent excel-lent proficiency at every position and she can link with the defense, trigger the attack and score from midfield. Watch for Crosby Cros-by Joyner up front with speed and finish. Watch for Heather Hatfield and Jessica Rogers as a formidable formi-dable duo at sweeper and stopper. Experience will also be seen in the returning juniors. ju-niors. Rachel Fischer's quickness on either wing is matched by Hailey Francis' Fran-cis' power on the Opposite side. Kaylynn Swanson's grit and Karlie Jensen's hustle should round out the midfield. Returning sophomore standout Chase Joyner may alternate at defense in the back and link at midfield on the wing; Newcomers Natalie Young and Kim Stratford both bring speed and ball control to the attack. Anisa Andrus and Jessica Jes-sica Bailey's strength will be paired with Betsy Cannon and Shelbi Hill's speed on defense. Heroes of Speed Daniel Souza Staff Writer TOOELE - With vehicles spanning over five decades, de-cades, classic sports cars burned rubber, fought to relive their glory days and put on a show with the Heroes He-roes of Speed race at Miller Mill-er Motorsports Park last Saturday. These museum pieces awed spectators showcasing showcas-ing how the elderly can still be fast, very fast. To make the sport fair, cars are separated sep-arated by both engine size and vehicle decade. Driving a 1972 Porsche 911 ST, Josh Vargo easily eas-ily maintained first place atop 35-plus cars during the combined afternoon race. Victory seemed certain cer-tain after the native from Tennessee received the last lap-symbolizing white flag. But Vargo spun the German-made racer with only two turns short of the checkered flag. "I let go of my focus. I went on the outside of the turn, got where the dirt is and lost control where I spun the car. Then I stalled the car trying to get back on the track. It was all me. reach, power, and reflexes. Clemens looks like the keeper to replace last year's MVP, Hannah Silvey. While the 4-3-3 was an effective ef-fective foundation last year and resulted in a good goal differential, Swanson will likely mix up the formations this year. A 44-2 or even a single striker may be good adaptations to the various defenses that the Devils will face this season. A driver driv-er from Dallas wasn't able to participate in the following follow-ing race and asked Vargo to pilot his 1972 Porsche IROC 3000 to the checkered check-ered flag in what turned out to be Saturday's most thrilling competition. With only 29 cars crossing cross-ing the finish line, Vargo had a tough time in gaining gain-ing positions while driving driv-ing the 27-numbered white Porsche. Vargo crossed the finish line in sixth. The big surprise of the Classic GT Group 5 race came at the last lap. Thomas Thom-as Mabey, a local driver from West Bountiful, driving driv-ing a 1966 Ford GT 40 5000 lingered in first place during dur-ing almost the whole race. With a few laps left to the end of the race, Michel De-fenbau De-fenbau lost control of his 1973 Porsche 911 RSR 2900 forcing race control to advise ad-vise a yellow flag where all the cars must remain in their current position and follow the pace car until the track has been cleared to racing again. 1 r" t bies virus, but it often occurs in wildlife species more oftea (Bats, raccoons, skunks, etc.) 1.
