She writes about her grandmother's kitchen and pantry. ' The kitchen was a room about 12x15 feet. There was a window at the west of the room and the old Charter Oak stove, which always shone with fresh polish, stood north of the window. On the south was first a door with a metal latch and led to stairs with two steps in the kitchen to make the incline less. East of the stairway stair-way were some shelves built in the wall, just over the kitchen table that had leaves that folded when not in use. On one shelf was the family bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Cove-nants, and Pearl of Great Price, where they could be reached conveniently. On the other shelf was grandmother's knitting and work basket, close at hand. On the third shelf stood a small lamp, a candle stick and candles. There were five chairs with woven raw hide bottoms made by hand the first year they came to Springville. Also in the kitchen was one rocker which she used as she sat to read, spin or knit. Mary Ann was very industrious and was never caught being idle. If she sat down to converse with a neighbor, neigh-bor, she was always busy on her knitting or some other handiwork item. The floors of the kitchen was scoured until the boards were white. A rag carpet woven by an early-day weaver covered the floor. These rugs were made by Mary Ann from worn-out clothing. cloth-ing. In the pantry were shelves filled with foods of all kinds obtainable. One set of shelves were filled with dishes. I distinct ly remember the blue and whiC china dishes she brought from England. ' One place that was always interesting was the deep, cool cellar beneath the old, log cabin where the milk, cream, butter and cheese were kept. One of my early recollections is the rows of bright pans of milk, the rolls of rm, yellow butter, the large cheeses. Besides making this for i her own use, she supplied many of her neighbors. Two of three times a year John and Mary Ann drove into Salt Lake City where they sold their dairy products in exchange for commodities that they could not obtain in Springville. Spring-ville. I remember the brass buckets buck-ets which were scoured until you could see your face in them, and the clean bench where the milk and cream and cheese always stood when not in use. In the Journal History Oct. 9, 1856, and from the Deseret News Oct. 9, 1856, page 256 we learned of Mary Ann at the annual annu-al exhibition of the Deseret Agricultural Agri-cultural and Manufacturing Society. Soci-ety. She received a prize for the best five pounds of butter. This prize was two dollars, but as she was not a member of the society, she could not claim the money. Up until she died, she had regular regu-lar customers for her butter. At one time she supplied five of the train men butter, which was delivered to them when the train stopped at the Springville Depot. The fruit she couldn't use was given to someone who needed it or was dried to be used later. The extra pumpkins were used to make syrup to sweeten the foods they dried for winter use. Candle Making Emma Lynette Richardson Conover Dance halls were lighted by tallow candles, sometimes quite a number being used at once. The candles were made from melted tallow. A wick of some coarse strands of cotton was carefully placed in the center of the candle mold and held by one person while the other poured the melted 'tallow.
