' Embarassed, she gave him the address of the shabby rooming house iil the East-Sixties. She was waiting fa the entrance of the place ! when at 6:30 a taxicab drew up at J A young "man came otrf of the curb and she saw Knight step out. ,A public cab,-the girl noted, and not a private car. . Judith' pushed the - heavy door open. and stood for a moment .on the top step. November Is a dark chilling month in the metroplis. It was dreary and cold this particular particu-lar evening." She pulled her coat a bit more clofeely about her, then with head high and a smile which was either assurance or the sign of a good gambler, she 'descended. Good evening! 1 hope Tm not late.". I think you're quite prompt.' He helped her into the cab. Wher both were settled there KJiigni leaned forward and "gave Instruc tions to the driver. He mentioned V the name of a French hotel well - jo Fifth avenue, old and quite famous for Its cuisine. - "1 hope you like it?" he added, turning toward Judith. :er eyes filled with amusement as she met his glance. - "I don't know" the girl answered "I've never been there but Tve wanted to go." ; "Good! I think youH find the food excellent. It hrs been a favorite favor-ite of mine for years. Never get tired of the place. And they know how to serve a meal, too." Now that this girl was sitting beside be-side him, Arthur Knight wondered why he hajd felt misgivings the Y " ;fhe"hp and Joined her.- moment after be had proposea me dinner 'engagement. She looked well, she looked the way a young .woman ought to look. Warily from his side of the cab he took in details : of her appearance. appear-ance. Judith was wearing a black cloth coat. It might have been inexpensive in-expensive but It didn't look it. The collar of black fox seemed to increase in-crease the delicacy, of ,her features and pale . skin. She wore a soft black velvet" toque, twisted Into the outlines of a tri-corne. The difficult shape was becoming. . How Arthur : Knight longed suddenly sud-denly for. the stilted preliminaries of the evening to be ended! Im -petuously he wanted to see this girl sitting- opposite '.at a rose-shaded table. He wanted to talk to her, io hear her answering, not as an Impromptu Im-promptu s acquaintance but as an old friend. : The silky lashes remained lowered low-ered to her cheek. y What was Judith Cameron thinking? It would be silly to say, "A penny for, your thoughts 1 Knight - stirred and glanced out the cab window. ' He looked back again and met the girl's eyes. She was smiling. ; : "I'd better warn you Tm hun-grv."-Jsaid Judith. 4. - : ""Well, Til warn you Tm opposed tp diets, myself." The cab stopped and an attenaant opened the, door. , ' ' Judith paused to glance up ; at the building a moment before approaching ap-proaching the canopied ; entrance. There was nothing Impressive about the5 hotel just an old-fashioned, rather drab appearing place. ; They made their way to the dining din-ing room. ; Knight checked coat and. "Judith said -she preferred to keep her wrap. : Then, a smfyng waiter stepped forward and led them to a table. - "Will - this ! be ? satisfactory?" The waiter, who spoke with a marked French accent, appeared to be accustomed to ferving Knfght. He helped Judith slip off her wrEp. Underneath the black coat was tha same blueish-gray frock she had worn in the office. Her only other dress, it happened, was at the cleaner's. . Still the frock was inconspicuous. inconspicu-ous.
