DANCE 1 "J' m. ki TT IT I 1fJ' s, ' h Sir The Uintah High School U'ettes held their annual Kick-a-thon last Friday after spending spend-ing the earlier part of the week at a dance camp in Midway. The seventeen participants performed a total of 8,653 high kicks, 509 kicks per girl, during the marathon event The Kick-a-thon topped a physically rigorous week for the girls, but their hard work paid off. They were awarded a trophy for an outstanding Hip Hop performance at the camp. U'ette coach Taunia Wheeler says she's looking forward to a great year. Master Bill Hall, Steven Beachem, Joe Bowden, Linda Morrill, Sorsha Evans, Trevor Nielson, Andrew Huff, Chris Kenny, Walker Neilson, Kent Neilson, Cody Evans, Levi Sanchez, and Josh Hamblin competed in board breaking competition. Taekwondo students attend championship in Orem. Students of Sung Cho's Taekwondo Academy, instructed instruct-ed by Master Bill Hall, recently attended the 2006 Royal West Kukkido championships in Orem. The tournament consisted of many events: sparring, which is a contest of two fighters who test their skills and wit against each other. Competitors display their skills in kicking, striking, strik-ing, and locking in a routine of power and balance. Weapons competition: competitors display dis-play their . skills in using a weapon of their choice (sword, staff, nunchucks and so on). The competitor demonstrates their skill in handling the weapon in a series of pre-arranged movements. move-ments. Team board breaking: teams will break boards in a series of routines. The routines move quickly, and the judges' giving the spectators plenty to watch and the directors a lot to worry about. The tournament was overseen by Grand Master Oyuk Kim, 9th degree black belt from Elgin, Dl. 'Those that competed in the score will be based on howlong-tournament from the Uintah it takes, smooth technique, difficulty, dif-ficulty, and how many boards,, were broken. Competitors came from all over Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, and Illinois. This year there were over 270 competitors com-petitors of all ages and ranks. There were as many as eight rings running at the same time, Basin were: Kent Neilson (took 1st in Forms and 2nd in sparring spar-ring and weapons), Cody Evans (3rd in Forms) Sorsha Evans (3rd in Forms), Joe Bowden (1st in men's black belt Sparring), Josh Hamblin (3rd in Sparring), Chris Kenny.
