Dr. Webster kicks off his zero unintentional deaths campaign Unless chronic pain is something some-thing that has been experienced, it is difficult to understand the problems associated with it. The problem is far-reaching. One in three Americans suffer from some type of chronic pain and pain causes more disability than cancer and heart disease combined. In addition, one half of adults experiencing chronic pain say their pain is not under control. Dr. Lynn R. Webster visited Vernal to present a seminar on pain-related medical topics. His seminar was the first of such seminars that will be given across the state to educate physicians, health care providers, provid-ers, and people suffering from chronic pain about the dangers dan-gers of pain medicine. Webster' is kicking off his campaign to reach the goal of zero unintentional uninten-tional deaths due to overdosing on pain medicine. Vernal was a good place to start his campaign cam-paign because the rate of unintentional unin-tentional deaths in rural areas is higher than in urban areas. Dr. Webster is board certified certi-fied in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He is also certified in addiction medicine. He has seen numerous deaths from accidental overdose of pain medicine. He is alarmed by the astronomical increases in unintentional unin-tentional overdose of prescription prescrip-tion drugs. "We cannot allow the death rate to continue to grow," said Webster. "Undertreated pain or pain that cannot be controlled is the most powerful stimulus stimu-lus for overusing prescription drugs. It is not generally about addiction," he said. Sometimes, despite all the medical community has, some pain cannot be adequately helped. Webster added that patients can look with hope to the future because technology is creating new things that are much better than what is available avail-able now in controlling pain. Better data about th reasons people use more drugs than prescribed is needed. "We don't know a lot of what we need to know in order to solve the problem, but we can't wail for the data," said Webster. " think just being aware will help the problem." Dr. Webster is concerned thai if something is not done aboul the problem, regulators such as the FDA will try to eliminate 01 decrease access to strong pair medication. Webster believes that if this happens, there wil be an increase in death's due tc suicide. "If pain isn't controlled to the best of our ability," said Webster, "there will be ar increase in the number of pea, pie who try fo escape theft1 pair!' through more drastic measure such as suicide.7 " During his seminar, Dr Webster also discussed the stresses that pain causes thai leads to overdose. He men tioned that unrelieved severe pain, the fear of not being believed, the impact of pain or family and friends, the finan cial impact of chronic pain and insurance denials for treatmenl all can lead to overdose. Dr. Wbester's message was clear, "If you use a strong pain medicine such as an opi oid, take it just as prescribed Patients do not have enough knowledge to alter the doses themselves." Webster is hoping to estab lish a foundation or organiza tion to raise funds that can be used to research the problem and educate physicians aboul the problem. "There is so mucfc we don't know, but what we dc know is that the rate of unin tentional deaths is rising at ar alarming rate. Kaylee Gardiner Brilee Snow A 1 Hannah .
