Uintah pen seas mi, The Uintah Utes have won 17th state wrestling tournament championships cham-pionships and the last one came in early 1987, but while the Vernal bunch is eager to defend their title and go after number 18 first they have to battle fellow teammates in the annual Wrestle Off Meet, Friday, November 20 at 7 p.m. at Uintah High School. "Everyone will wrestle and there will be 22 to 23 matches during the evening. We have two state champions cham-pions back in Bryan Van Tassell and Brian Southam. Both are looking good and are working really hard. All the wrestlers are working real hard," stated Uintah High School head wrestling coach Ed Johnson. "We worked on takedowns, wrestling techniques and a lot of conditioning last week. "An extra weight class for a total of 13 has been added this year. It will give more athletes a chance to wres tle. In two or three years it will be really good. The first year will be a little struggle for some people, but we (Uintah) will be in good shape. Wrestlers have to all of sudden get used to new weights and the new weight classification is really big on the top end." The weight classes this year arc 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 143, 152, 160, 171, 189 and heavyweight. Last year the weight classes were 98, 105. 112, 119, 12G, 132. 138. 145, 155. 167. 185 and heavyweight. 98 and 105 have been place together as 103. There is still 112 and 119, but 126 has Uen dropped to 125. Last year there were three weights, 132. 138 and 143, but now there are four weights at 130, 135, 140 and 143. 132 has been dropped to 130 and 138 moved up to 140 and a new weight added In 135. 155 has become 152 and 1C7 h;is moved to 171 with a 1W pound c;m Ix-mg furmtnl. l5 has now In come Ml Now instead of there being four weight classes over 150 pounds there are five divisions. divi-sions. Battling for the 103 pound varsity position are Quinn Dickson, a part-time part-time 98 pound varsity starter last year; Chet Stubbs, Ryan Horrocks and Bobby McGovern. A second place winner at 112 pounds Chance Rollins is once again at the same weight this year. Also at 1 12 pounds is Eric LeFevre. Bryan Van Tassell, last year's 98 pound champion as a ninth grader, is at 119 pounds this year. Other 119 pounders are Kent Murray, Roger Scott and David Clifford. Clif-ford. McKee competed in last year's state tournament at 105 pounds and Dickson was a 98 pound competitor at the 19B6 state meet. Casey Beynon, Shane Oaks, Mark Garcia and Theron Case are 130 pounders. Mark Caldwell, Courtney Pedersen, Mark Weisgcrber, Travis McGaugley and Phil Browning are in the hunt for the 135 pound position. Caldwell wrestled a few varsity matches mat-ches last year. Another defending state champion, Brian Southam. is at the HO pound spot. Southam took state last year at 132 pounds. Wes Kindt and Andrew Drollinger are at 140 pounds. Uintah is also loaded at 145 pounds with Scott Hardman, 126 pound state tournament competitor last year, clashing with John Nielson, Ryan Weeks, Travis Hanchett, Ryan Case and Scott Baird for the top varsity var-sity spot. The Utes also have three returning state placers in the next three weight classes. Nathan Sunkees, a third placer in the 1986 state meet, is at 152 pounds. Another 152 pounder is Lex Cook. Mike McCurdy, who placed third last year at 145 pounds in the state meet, is in the 160 pound class with Travis Bedell and Chad Russey. Second place contestant at the state meet. Brian Murray is at 171 pounds. Other 171 pounders are Tracy Richens and Neal Darlington. Ute 189 pounders are Russ Augustus and Bruce Darlington. Augustus was the Ute varsity starter for a major part of last season at 167 pounds. Heavyweight wrestlers are Doug Scott and Steve Orton. The first scheduled meet will be against Union High School in Vernal, Tuesday, November 24 at 7:30 p.m. The first league meet will be against Carbon in Vernal. December 3. '"Union lost a number of wrestlers from last year, but they always have a good bunch. They have one wrestler back by the last name of Brown," remarked Johnson.
