A NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER captures a welcome from the Maeser 2 news staff. ive and flake m KUW By Merle Young Express Faotur Editor Dinosaur bones and fossils suddenly sudden-ly lost some of their interest when the KUTV Channel 2 Newstar van pulled into the parking lot at Dinosaur Gardens last week. The space age, state of the art equipment for transmitting TV images im-ages drew the children like flies to see what all the hub-bub was about. A convoy of Channel 2 news people arrived ar-rived in Vernal Friday, May 2 to begin a month long on the spot live news coverage of the state called, "Celebrate Utah." The tour of news broadcasts will conclude May 30. "We want to do a positive broadcast broad-cast session in Vernal," said reporter John Stehr one of the news personalities per-sonalities and crew of KUTV who spent the day filming and interviewing interview-ing in the area. Michelle King, Bill Marcroft, Fred Wix and a host of backup crew and cameramen will be taking a hand in the news broadcasts. Along with the Newstar van, the caravan of vehicles that parked cast of Dinosaur Gardens included a large rental truck full of equipment, a smaller truck full of technical supplies, sup-plies, a huge generator and three or four news cars that wert never still long enough to be accurately counted. It has been a pleasure to work with the people," King remarked. remark-ed. Gathering and presenting live TV news broadcasts is an amazing fast paced process. Trailing John Stehr and his news photographer Rick Jewett to Dinosaur Monument on a typical news gathering trip gave new insight into the techniques of news gathering. On arrival at the monument, Rick unloaded his camera and tripod and a small box of personal microphones from the back of the news wagon. Personnel at the monument had been forewarned of their coming and they had their uniforms in order and every hair in place. Jewett got busy filming a group of students from Ashley school where they were getting Instruction from one of the State Park's interpreters at the base of the quarry. In the meantime, Stehr Interviewed Dan Churt of the Parks Service about the hihtory of the monument and then parts of the Interview were captured on video tape by Jewett. While Siehr visited with some of the tourists, Jewett filmed families as they toured through the quarry building and then took his camera to the etlge of en overlook to capture the meandering Crrrn llivef and the dramatic sound of the wind Jn the back ground, Watching the anchorman and the f4ioto08iher otk at a tram wai ,ke itri-ir.g the reason for buHr on tread, Decisions on tsrwra ar-gjc, difrc!)fi!k, i!.!mtri aftd OtrtrfVa' lion are rxcharg'-d ilhrnit touching MfuiUve tVhf!;t,)!,!y brl. rrfl the tram U paramount to $r the d w sj-ikMy, arUMicaJly and Aftrf If fiJmir-g In iMt.prie4 lh tfti ttf my! tf tr?t and friri tr.ez'.f art t4 the f,!m fray tf lf-4? afwhr fna Ifl sir ftiH ttt u.pt ;ir'.!,9l hr ijririihg tiarl t4 h; fjr-m tint) 14 tTj ir.!4 $ t,!4 hi f' !') lfot INI l54 W4 fni"r M (4 lh f4fl?-g M tit,rt Mor.yr.cr4.. far--- ti-c?atn tv ,rl My r4 -' I V ft';f g'll K"- 1 g 1 ;1 fvn 4.00 pm to 10.00 pni tot c tvrvecti 5th grade offered to the KUTV At 4:30 p.m. Stehr was giving a live report from Dinosaur Gardens with Jewett running the camera. They had chosen as a background a view into the northwest corner of the park. Taped interviews of museum curator Peter Laraba and other parks personnel, per-sonnel, a few break aways to the film shot at the monument and several other little blocks of Vernal news were woven into the "First News" broadcast. Some folksy scenes from Roosevelt and Myton were also included in-cluded in the 4:30 blurp from Vernal. Vern-al. On the south end of the gardens was another camera trained on Michelle King interviewing Dick Winters about tourism. Meanwhile the Dinamites, represent ting the Chamber of Commerce, viewed all the news action on a monitor set up in the park. School children, interested adults and park visitors watched the procedure from nooks and crannies all over the garden. It was a positive news broadcast about the Hasin and one that made the residents take a little closer look at how they were portrayed to the world through the eyes of a news camera. Stehr said, "Sometimes I feel that warmers just dun't appreciate what marvelous country they have with all their natural resources snd recreation possibilities " As you can ire by hi remark, the KUTV's news day in Vernal was a day of sharing things: the wonderful sights, sounds and people of the Ilasiri rr exchanged for education on the inirrrslirg. tlrctronic miracle of trlrvisiqfl Bftd the artistic, drmafl ding i!mi of television fiewi I'ftud ca?Uf g from the firld.
