Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, November 27-30, 2010 The Park Record C-7 9 • 127 Hours screened in Utah ' SALT LAKE CITY - Fox Searchlight Pictures, The Utah Film Commission, and The Governors Office of Economic Development recently held a cast and crew screening of "127 Hours," directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire"), and starring James Franco ("Spiderman"). Filmed entirely in Utah, the movie tells the true survival story of Aron Ralston (Franco) who became trapped in a remote canyon in the southern part of the state. The Utah cast and crew were welcomed by Boyie, Ralston and the film's producer, Christian Colson. Governor Gary R. Herbert, Spencer Eccles, executive director of the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development and Marshal] Moore, the director of the Utah Film Commission, introduced the filmmakers to the audience. "What a wonderful film that showcased the talents of Utah's cast and crew," Herbert said. "It's exciting to see what Utah offers to filmmakers, not only do we have beautiful landscapes but we have hundreds of film professionals and support services to assist in the making of the film." The state of Utah provided a 20 percent tax credit for "127 Hours" through the Motion Picture Incentive Fund (MPIF). "The film incentive made it possible for this movie to be made entirely in Utah," said Eccles. "It created jobs and economic development throughout the state including rural Utah, where this kind of influx of dollars is very important." About 150 Utahns were hired to fill positions for the cast, crew and support services for the production. "This is a big win for Utah," said Moore. "The movie hired a good number of local professionals, shows off the grandeur of Utah on the big screen and in only five months time spent nearly $9 million in the state." "There was great crew here in Utah, Producer Christian Colson said. "We brought in a handful of key collaborators from our previous work and then hired locally wherever possible. We had great crew and a beautiful place to work." Prior to its theatrical release, "127 Hours" was promoted internationally on the film festival circuit including the London Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival. The promotional tour ended in Salt Lake City with the cast and crew screening. "It's a great serendipitous moment that we conclude the tour with Salt Lake City," said Mr. Boyle. Some of the actual rescuers that helped Ralston attended the screening. "What I went through is a gift that I Jjave been able to hand over TO Danny and his team," said Ralston. "This screening was really special because my experience happened here in Utah." "127 Hours" was released in theaters Nov. 24. Formed in 1974, the Utah Film Commission is part of the Governor's Office of Economic Development and is a member of the Association of Film Commissioners International. The mission of the Utah Film Commission is to create high paying quality jobs within the motion picture industry, to market the entire state as a location for film and commercial production, and to promote the use of Utah support services and professionals. The commission is client driven servicing both in state and out-of-state as well as international production companies. The animals wrap up their breeding season in December. It's the time of year when rams that are of equal size charge into each other, slamming their horns together in a spectacular head-butting ritual that's designed to attract the attention of the ladies (female sheep called ewes). "It's fun and exciting to watch the way the rams act this time of the year," says Brent Stettler, regional conservation outreach manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources. That's why Stettler and other DWR staff have chosen Dec. 3 and 4 as the dates for this year's Bighorn Sheep Watch. The watch will be held in and near the towns of Price and Green River this year.
