' ' By JUDY JENSEN Editor There has been a great deal of speculation and some criticism of President George Bush's decision to continue his fishing trip in light of what is happening in the Persian Gulf. Some have criticized the president's presi-dent's actions as irresponsible since there are now 21,000 Westerners, including 3,000 Americans caught in Iraq and Iraqi -occupied Kuwait that Bush is referring to as "hostages. Others have interpreted the action ac-tion to be a way of sending a message to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein that the United States is conducting business as usual. And that the message from the U.S. is clear. His actions will not be tolerated. Supporters claim Bush is F telling Hussein, "We've made our position clear. The ball is now in your court. ' ' We asked area residents to respond res-pond to the question, "Do you think Bush is wrong to be fishing during the Iraqi crisis?" The respondents had interesting answers. "I think there is nothing wrong with the president taking a vacation," said Sarah Hansen. "I cannot imagine the stress he must be under at this time. I know he's well informed, and I think he is handling the crisis well. Fishing may give him the time he needs to think clearly about the important decisions he needs to make at this time," said Sarah. Jonathan Brown agreed. "I think there is an ulterior motive to his fishing," he said. "The president presi-dent is doing as much planning fishing as he would be behind his Lalliss. "My brother-in-law was just called up with the reserves. I think Bush has everything under control. He's human too. He's under a lot of pressure and I'm sure fishing helps him to sort things out," said Diann. Brad Lowman, the young man who was featured as a master fisherman in a recent Cprarticle, agreed. "What else can he do?" he asked. "He's done all of the negotiating he can do. I think he is saying 'I've made my move, now you make yours. I think he's doing just the right thing," said Brad. desk in the oval office," he said. "I think it's definitely wrong for him to be on vacation with the possibility of young Americans having their lives in jeopardy,' ' said Charles P. Adams. "It is in poor taste for him to be away from the White House. I don't care how many telephones he has. This is typical of Bush. After the Panama invasion, he was dimwitted enough to send Quayle on a good will tour to Panama and most of the nations would not let him in. I just don't like his track record," said Charles. Ruby Evans disagreed. "I don't think there is anything wrong with the president fishing. I think he's trying to put us at ease. He's well informed. He can respond to any crisis from there as easily as anywhere else," she said. "I think he's doing a good job of keeping a low profile," said Diann |
