Show RDT Review Student workshop productions a triumph dances. A technically difficult number, it was danced superbly. Following "Triju" was the high point of the concert. "Dithyramb" was a nightmare dance, a number which conjured all the possibilities of Hell. Beautifully danced, tremendously tremen-dously moving, and terribly powerful, the dance left the audience speechless. This was a performance every bit as good as one could expect from the professional RDT company. Another intermission let the crowd come back to earth, and was followed by "National Pastime," a light, humorous and done and amusing. The mood of change w arrested, however, by "Take 21 " which followed "S is Back" and looked very much like the second and third numbers in the concert Again, the dance was light pleasant, and well danced but boring. ' ' The final number made the entire evening. One of the reeulP RDT repertory, "Tin-Tal" h" always been one of my favorite dances done by the company The performance by the students was in no way disappointing. Instead it was spectacular, a beautiful performance which left the crowd cheering. Both concerts were highly interesting and successful. When one adds the consideration that they were student productions however, the concerts become a triumph. very well done number and "Gospel Songs," another light number. On the whole, this was one of the more enjoyable dance concerts I have ever gone to, including those of the regular RDT season. The Saturday concert was also excellent; however, it did not have the variety of the Thursday concert. The first number, "Summerdance," premiered last year in the student performance. It is an exciting dance with an unfortunate beginning! After the first few minutes, however, it is excellent. It was well performed and the general mood was set for the concert through this number. The next two numbers, "Unfinished Flight" and "Aeolian Winds" were nice, but very much the same sort of dance. Both started slowly and improved. Both were well performed, per-formed, but were not particularly exciting bits of choreography. A jazz number, "S is Back," followed to change the tone of the concert. This number, much like those you can see on any television variety show, was well By JIM WALDO Chronicle Staff The two student performances given as the culmination of the Repertory Dance Theatre's workshop were good concerts. Not just good student concerts, but good dance concerts, at times rivalling even the concerts of the regular RDT performances. The two performances were given on Thursday and Saturday. The first concert, suprisingly, was in my opinion the stronger concert, both from the point of view of the individual performances, per-formances, the choreography, and the programming. However, the Saturday performance was excellent. The weakest part of the first concert was the first number. "Six Tribal Hymns as Performed by the Reformed Workshop Choir" had good movement, but was a little rough at first when the dancers could not seem to get together. The dancing improved quickly, however, and the work ended with a very polished look. After that, it was all up. The second number, "Kaleidoscope," was technically a more demanding number on the individual in-dividual dancers, and was done remarkably well. "Tube," which followed, was a merge of the styles of dance and theater much in the style of the Anna Sokolow Players Project, and was very well thought out and done. Following the first intermission, in-termission, "Triju", a trio number, showed a much heavier mood than the previous three |
