Show 2h f DR. SYDNEY W. ANGLEMAN . . .English professor emeritus Professor dies Dr. Sydney W. Angleman, professor emeritus of English and former dean of General Education, died late Monday afternoon during open-heart surgery. Dr. Angleman served the University for 43 years in several positions. He first taught as an assistant professor of English beginning in 1927. By 1948 he had received his doctorate from the University of California and had become dean of the University College of English and director of General Education. Edu-cation. He became associate dean of the College of Letters and Sciences in 1961. He received an honorary doctorate from the University in 1968. Dr. Angleman, a graduate of Amherst, served on the University Faculty Council for several years. He is credited with taking a major responsibility in the early administration and policy formation of the general education program. Dr. Angleman's associates admired his hard work. Dr. Sterling McMurrin, dean of the Graduate School of Philosophy, introduced Dr. Angleman before a lecture as "the conscience of the University." Uni-versity." Dr. Angleman's former secretary, Mrs. Lillian Ence, said of the late professor, "He was one of the great men of the University. He will never be replaced as far as I'm concerned. He represented all that is good in the University." |
