Show Pensamientos " Introducing Chicano thought Tony Parra J Hola! The purpose of Pensamientos will be to educate and to introduce intro-duce a whole new way of thinking ... the Chicano thought. Pensamientos Pen-samientos means thoughts, feelings feel-ings or beliefs. This is exactly what I want to express, the Chicano Chi-cano thought which has never been listened to. Americans in this society have the notion that Chicanos, because of their quiet ways, don't have anything to contribute-especially in Utah. Also, Chicanos in Utah believed the same thing because society manipulated them like sheep. However, Chicano thought has come alive in Utah. The sleeping giant has awakened here, and, as in the other five Southwestern states, the sleeping giant was never sleeping, but thinking . . . thinking a new philosophy which he wants to share. Chicano Studies I would like to direct my first comments to the idea of Chicano studies at the University of Utah. Chicanos abound, especially in the Southwest at schools like the University Uni-versity of New Mexico, UTEP, San Jose, Berkeley, the University of. Santa Barbara, and the Universit of Arizona. Efforts are bej made to bring Chicano philos phy, thought and way of life j these schools. University Response The University has been aj proached through proper channel on this same topic. Let's hop that this university will respond i; those who look to the Universit as the vehicle by which the contribute to their society. Administrators who get hut. up with technicalities, and oi own people who utter old rhetor, can be the worst oppressors of th Chicanos. "1970 'The Year of the Ch, cano' " should be an interests one. On August 29, Los Angele was the scene of a confrontatio: between Chicanos and the Lo Angeles Police. This Universit saw a slight confrontation th: summer. Forty Chicanos, here ft the first time under one progran refused to be intimidated by Cam pus Police. Confrontation Issue Is confrontation the America way of life? Who provokes got frontation-the element that n fuses to listen, or the element th; wants to be given a chance tot heard for the first time? Mayt Americans should say "Americ; love it and share it," instead ( "America-love it or leave it." Bueno . . . let's now lookup; the mural on the walls of tl library at the University of Me ico in "Mexico City. Below tl mural are words by an unknot author. They say, "Christians b the Grace of God, gentleme thanks to our Spanish descec Noble lords from our Indian ai cestry, Mexicans by pride at tradition and Americans by de tiny," Thus, we are the Mexica: -American, the Chicano . . . |
