Show Black Studies program-not program-not a good idea how "horrible" his race has been treated. He is told how his race has been "persecuted", ignored and looked upon. Finally, he is told that this is still going on and how the whites still look down on him and secretly resent and even hate him. Now, what kind of attitude is that Negro going to have? I know I would get out of there ready to blast the first 1 white I saw. This type of black studies program is j not just fantasy either, its happening exactly this way right now in California and other places. 1 L By Jay Savage A black studies program never has and never will be a good idea. Oh, I agree that the Negro's impact on American and world life has been larger than most people would believe, but this is no criterion for setting up a separate black studies program. In many cases and m many university classes the Negro's influence is ignored; this should be and is being changed; this, however, is all that needs changing. By teaching a separate set of classes for blacks only, taught by blacks only, with emphasis on Diacks only, we breed national destruction. We would actually teach rebellion with a set of black studies, not raise the Negro's self-esteem. Attitude? What exactly do you think the attitude would be 1 a fine cooperative negro after he has been inrough his courses in black studies? First the student. enters 'he class and is told that he, as a gro, is lucky to be able to attend a university Furt they wouldn,t let his father 20 years ago. shirr he 'S even luckier because he is in black how 3nd he can Iearn how &eat ne fe- He is told : gr.at his ancestry is and about all the historical gro figures. After the black student is clearly i "iuai, and maybe superior, to the whites, the second J e of the studies begins. Here the negro learns Not Good This type of black studies is not good for anyone; neither black nor white. Why? Because it will lead to revolution, or at least a civil war which will accomplish nothing but the destruction of the United States and both blacks and whites. Think how much better regular university classes would be that included the negro in its studies and treated him as an equal instead of some separate peculiar class of people. The advantages of the latter system are obvious. It promotes compatibility and cooperation instead of the former's discord and revolution. What advantages did John Langes' article show for black studies? What advantages does a black studies program have except a superficial, temporary cure ', for the current demands of a few radical negroes? IVe have to think ahead of the ultimate ;onsequences before we make a decision. |
