It also be the Utes' first night n. of the season, beginning at 8p By Geoff Towns Staff Writer The Utah football team, sporting a 1-2 record, has not had its name mentioned frequently in the Western- Athletic Conference (WAC) individual and team statistics thus far, but a few individual Utes have made the WAC charts. The Redskins have an edge in punting with Craig Smith handling those duties. In WAC competition Smith is tied for first with Wyoming's Bob Jacobs, each averaging 41.8 yards per kick. Smith is listed as 15th best in the country. Averaged 38 Yards As a sophomore last year, Smith broke into the starting lineup midway through the season as a defensive halfback and did an outstanding job. As a punter he averaged 38 yards per boot, kicking some as far as 70 yards. Smith has the valuable ability to place his punts and to put them high enough to allow good coverage. Jim Street returns kickoffs for the Redskins, and he does it better than anyone else, leading all WAC competition. Street has taken the initiative eight times for 265 yards and one touchdown, averaging 33.1 yards per return. With a 96-yard touchdown return to his credit, he is ranked as the fourth best kickoff return specialist in collegiate football. Junior College Transfer Street came to the University last year from Los Angeles Community College where he was in the starting lineup for two consecutive years. As a senior Street is in his second year as a Redskin starter, holding down the defensive halfback position. Ray Groth, the Redskins' fine quarterback, ranks fifth in the conference in total offense. In three games and 87 plays he has netted 400 yards and three touchdowns, passing for 272 and rushing for the remaining 128. Groth was the starting flanker for the Redskins last season as a |
