Show Does Anyone At U Care? Editor: I was very disappointed when I went to see the movie "Troublemakers" "Trouble-makers" shown Wednesday during Focus Week. During two showings of the movie, there were not more than 20 people in the Little Theater at one time. Are there only 20 people peo-ple in the University who are interested inter-ested in knowing more about what is going on around them? Who Cares? I've noticed this lack of interest in many educational functions at the U lately. Is anyone interested in becoming an educated person anymore, or has the sole purpose of universities become to provide people with "an education?" Part of the purpose of educating young people is to make them aware of things that exist in the parts of the world with which they have no direct di-rect contact. They need this awere-ness awere-ness in order to understand better other people's actions and also so they can arrive at the best possible possi-ble solution to their own problems by being able to consider many other people's methods of solving these same problems. It has been said many times that these days the actions of any people in t h e world can affect us as directly as the actions of the people in our community. Is there so little interest in the Negro problem in Utah because people think that this is a problem "somewhere else" and doesn't concern con-cern us?" Is there little interest in other countries of the world because be-cause their problems "don't concern con-cern us?" Do the problems of the economically deprived religious and racial minorities in Salt Lake City and County get no attention because be-cause we "have no ghettos, slums or minority problems in this area?" Action Needed I'm not advocating that anyone change his basic ideas or beliefs unless he sees a need to change them. I am advocating that people in this university, this state and in the United States in general begin to see outside themselves and their own personal problems and see what is going on in the world, what they can do about it and what must do about it. I suggest that it is imperative that right now we Americans lose our selfishness and disinterest and join and actively participate in the world around us. Karen M. Bolton |
