The former assistant dean of students said he sat in on a meeting in 1952 in which the president and vice president for international affairs of NSA battled down a proposal that the organization publish the sources of all funds. The proposal was made to answer red-baiters who had charged NSA support came from communist sources. Erickson said the probable reason the State Department and CIA were originally willing to support NSA was that in the early 1950's NSA was the only group willing to present a Western viewpoint view-point in the Communist dominated student groups of that period. The president of NSA in 1952, William Denser, attended a youth conference in Latin America dominated by Communists. When the Communists ran out of money during the conference, Denser was able to raise funds from private sources in the United States, thereby saving the conference and casting a favorable light on U.S. aims. Discontinue Programs Erickson said that if NSA had not gotten support from the government at that point, international programs would have been discontinued for lack of funds. While Erickson said NSA officers were probably not asked to do anything more for the money than just continue as before 1 Wednesday story from the Collegiate Press Service sa.d recent officers have had to sign "security agreements" with OA and that forrneremployes of the NSA International Comm.ssion re-ported re-ported to CIA on a regular basis.
